What's the worst thing you've been spoiled for?

Kinda both the worst and best thing to happen in my case- the ending of Persona 3. After getting spoiled on it I was severely depressed (mainly because it was a bad time irl as well and this just kicked me even more) but on the other hand, I probably would have taken it way worse if I had played it unspoiled so this way, I could just not play the ending. So yeah... both bad and good.

I get you were going through a bad time, but... The entire point is "memento mori" so it feels like you want the protag to cheat death just because it's happyfeelgood. Like, I guess what did you expect in a game that shoves "remember that one day you will die" into your face?

Re: What's the worst thing you've been spoiled for?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-13 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is ... he doesn't really die. I mean, his body eventually does in that add-on thing afair but his soul is eternally stuck in a fate worse than death situation and that's the thing that sucks so much.

It's

He's literally just Jesus 2.0

I'm sorry that the game about death an accepting you die is depressing and has the protag die at the end??? (And yeah, he's dead. He just made his death matter.)

Re: What's the worst thing you've been spoiled for?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-14 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The fuck is your problem lol. I mean, the whole Jesus 2.0 was another way in which the whole thing sucked -it's just lazy. And yeah, yeah, it's the point of the game blah blah. Sure. It's also not even remotely original when it comes to Japanese games/media in general so ... Someone on the internet didn't like it, get over it.

Star Wars The Last Jedi, but it was less being spoiled and more just having the plot accurately explained to me and I realized I absolutely hated it. I watched the movie thinking it couldn't be that bad or that dumb, but it was. It has just reinforced my stance that spoilers are good, actually. I wish I'd paid more attention to it, then I wouldn't have wasted my money paying for a ticket. That is fifty bucks for a night out that I'll never see back again.

Spoiler I'm most proud of avoiding is the end of Cowboy Bebop. I watched several years after the series first aired and wasn't going out of my way to avoid spoilers, but had no idea there was a notorious meme spoiling the ending. Missed it by pure dumb luck!

every time there's some big fucking disaster in the bay area (earthquake, fire, etc.) I happen to be out of town at the time.

That is good that you missed out on utter chaos.

Ed's death in the first Fullmetal Alchemist. My friend had a bootleg with subs and I asked if it had a good ending, which she took to mean that she should tell me exactly what happened in great detail. I was heartbroken because Ed was my favorite character.

On the other end, I just finished season two of Good Omens and I'm really surprised I didn't run into any spoilers 'cause now it feels like my feeds are full of spoilers.

I often seek out spoilers for things I care heavily about, so I can't actually think of any really brutal spoiler experiences.

A guy I used to be friends with in HS took it upon himself to yell out "SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE!" at a party once. It had been a few months since the book came out, but I hadn't read it yet at that point, so I was spoiled.

I wasn't that mad at the time, but looking back I'm like, jesus, what a dipshit.

As for avoiding spoilers: the first time my friend and I watched Fight Club, neither one of us knew anything about it. We were expecting a movie about boxing. Going in totally cold was pretty awesome, honestly. I know it's one of those movies that's becomes increasingly fraught with sociopolitical baggage over the years, but I still love it tbh (and I'm a feminine ace woman, not a het dudebro, for the record).

Oh man, I had a friend spoil Sirius' death for me. He wasn't trying to, like he was actively trying to avoid giving spoilers during a discussion and then his face did something so fucking dramatic when Sirius' name came up. Like, I could not care LESS now, but at the *time* I was like dude, you're a theatre kid, learn how to school your FACE.

The other significant spoilers (unsought) for me were... both The Sixth Sense and The Others I had spoiled for me.

I was dodging a LOT of spoilers for Get Out but read *just enough* to like... pick out all the relevant things that led to most of the big twists? So no one person spoiled me! I'm just well-versed enough in how stories work I guess, and particularly in horror (and social horror tends to be my big fave), that I was putting together all the pieces just a few steps faster than the people I was watching with. But that was fun because then I got to turn and watch *them* when reveals hit.

I spoiled Dumbledore’s death for someone but in my defense it was their fault. They were a huge fan and we were talking about HP and I asked if they were all caught up and they said yes. So I start talking about that stuff and they blew their top. The book had been out a long time, something like a year or close to it and I was really confused at their reaction. It turned out they were movie only fan and didn’t think anyone but little kids read the books. They thought every adult HP fan they’d ever met was a movie only fan. This was a coworker and our office was full of HP fans. I felt bad and still kinda do because the look on their face…I don’t like making people feel bad. But they were awful to me about it and for the rest of the time we worked together they brought it up a lot, always in a way to make me look like some evil person who ruined something precious just because I get enjoyment from it. It caused some workplace friction, they were in conflict with a lot of people and under investigation at the time this all happened. I was glad when they finally got fired.

In movie terms for this coworker: what. an. idiot.

The person who was spoiled sounded like a grade A jackass. I got the confusion of not knowing that you thought they meant they were caught up with the books, not the films. But the faultline there is...silly little misunderstanding.
For them to keep bringing it up as a means to pull your leg/legit make you feel bad, fucking jackass.

Not me personally, but I witnessed one of my friends getting spoiled for the ending of Revolutionary Girl Utena (the series, not the movie) and being absolutely pissed off. Our other friend had just finished watching it and came to us ranting that the ending was so dumb ruined the whole thing, and blurted out what the ending was. When the first friend got upset over being spoiled, other friend said it didn't matter because she'd done her a favor by telling her so she didn't have to waste her time watching it now. Being there as that played out was pretty shitty, not just because RGU is one of my favorite shows up to and including the ending.

Wow. Your friend thinks RGU has a dumb ending? Tell me they didn't understand RGU without saying they didn't understand RGU...

one time me & a friend from the BBC Merlin fandom were talking about how excited we were to see 'Parked' (indie film starring the same lead actor) when another friend jumped in with 'you know his character [REDACTED] at the end, right?'. we (shocked) are like no, actually, we didn't know that. 'oh,' she says. 'I thought everyone knew by now.' I remind her that the film hadn't even gone out on general release yet (it had been played about 2-3 times at festivals). She was unrepentent. 12 years on I'm still annoyed.
