I feel you, OP. My first fandom, a long time ago, was a soap opera fandom. I don't tell many people that was my first fandom because of the judgment. It was a lot of fun though, and I miss it too. The craziest stuff happens on soap operas, which really lets you go crazy in fic too.

Soap operas aren't my thing, but I'm glad you had fun OP. There's no 'correct' kind of media to be into fandom-wise and honestly, if I could get past the way soap operas are structured(they're meant to work the way they do, I just don't jive with it) they do look like they're a lot of fun to engage with and I bet chatting about them with other fans is also really fun.

Because in the end that's all that matters. :)

Which soap opera, OP?
I used to watch Days Of Our Lives, Another World, Santa Barbara, and Guiding Light.

NA

I watched a lot of soaps at one time or another. The ones that I got into, for a while at least, were Days of Our Lives (gave up on that one with the devil), Another World (damn, I loved the older woman/younger man Matt and Donna storyline), Santa Barbara (watched that until the end), General Hospital (after a while, too many of the actors that I liked had been replaced), Port Charles (I liked it when it was about interns, but then, you know, vampires), One Life to Live (I don't remember why I stopped watching this, Erika Slezak was a tour de force), All My Children (this one pretty much revolved around Erica), Guiding Light (I was all about Harley & Mallet at one point), The Young and the Restless (this one I got into because of my grandpa), and even Generations (yeah, that show did not last very long). I did try As the World Turns, Bold and the Beautiful, and Passions, but they didn't work for me.

General Hospital was good too. I never watched Passions- I hated that! Never watched Generations, Port Charles, or Bold and the Beautiful.
Do you remember a sop opera called Capitol (based in Washington D.C.)?

ayrt

I never saw that one. I think it ended just before I started really getting into soaps. The only one I ever had a real distaste for was Sunset Beach. I saw half an episode a quarter of century ago and I still cringe.

I watched 2000 Malibu Road! LOLOL

I missed the word opera at first, was a bit disappointed when I figured it out. I really wanted to know more about drama in the soap fandom.

Lye soap vs melt and pour is the main divide but within the melt and pour you have the glycerine vs butters factions. It’s a glorious train wreck to watch tbh.

Oh yeah, there is a ton of drama in the soap making hobby fandom.

I admit I don’t think of soap operas as having fandoms, more like dedicated viewers. Which, duh *face!palm*

It’s a shame you think anyone would look down on you for it though. Soap operas are so popular and they DO have a devoted audience who get wrapped up in plots and characters and casting…basically they’re the perfect medium for fandom!

I’m glad you had the wonderful experiences that you did and I hope you can experience that again whether it’s another soap opera or something else.

Aww, I'm not OP but this could be my secret! Days of Our Lives was my obsession in high school (the 90s). I dabbled in Passions, because it was so bonkers. Got hooked on Another World in its final days and then followed some of its stars who moved over to Guiding Light.

OP is spot on about the wackiness of the fandom. Back in the good ol' days of message boards...

I used to watch Days when Marlena was possessed, good times. And watching Passions was always fun :D

I recall being obsessed with Days of Our Lives in my middle school and high school days.

I have a fandom friend who is a huge soap opera viewer. I was able to talk to her about her favorite ship on Days because Sam was my favorite character when I was into the show. I stopped watching before EJ came into Salem though. I was able to follow the story but I just had to take my friend's word for it that Sam and EJ had a steamy roller coaster relationship.

I sometimes wish I could watch soap operas like I used to but the medium doesn't appeal to me anymore. I do miss being able to talk to people about soaps sometimes lol

I still watch soaps. I'm also a wrestling fan so I clearly have no shame lol
