Right? This secret is confusing for me because there's always been fandom stuff for sale. Anybody remember zines??? They weren't free, you had to buy them. Idgi.

In general, though, if you contributed a story or art to a zine, you would get a free copy of that zine. People who didn't contribute to them had to buy them, because it cost money to produce them. However, it was considered bad form to make a profit from them.

Yeah, that's the primary difference here. When you bought a zine, you got an actual physical item that cost money to produce, and the people who made the zine either weren't making money off it OR they were giving the proceeds to charity. Zines were never meant to be a vehicle for profit, they were something that was made for love of the fandom.
