Late 90s-early 00s, small town in central California. Part of what made the difference for me was having a sister two years younger than me, while I was one of the younger people in my grade. So when I was 14, say, I'd be spending most of my time at school with 14-15s, and any 12yos I saw were in the category of 'little sister's friends', and then when I was 16, I'd be with mostly the 16-17s, and any 14 year olds I knew were, again, friends of my little sister and therefore KIDS in my eyes.

Whereas now, as an adult, I know *plenty* of people who are two years younger than me but I know them through hobbies/social spaces where they've got nothing to do with my little sister, and even if they did, she's also an adult now.
