Oh, yeah, I totally agree. You know what else pissed me off? Light being Japanese. I mean, that's an English name and he has light hair. Also, Mello and Near should have been white people. In fact, I think that when we make live action versions of anime, we should piss on their Japanese roots and the culture portrayed in the work, and portray everyone as white Americans. Amirite? Who's with me?

[/sarcasm]

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, I just want to ask --- weren't L, Mello and Near all supposed to be British? Because I thought Wammy House was in England... or did they just come from all over the world and that was just where it was located? *confused*

[identity profile] holyamialone.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm pretty sure they are British. It kind of iffed me at first too but after his performance, I just can't complain, he was absolutely amazing.

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, L was pretty damn awesome in that movie, IMO. Mekkio up there says he's actual Eurasian, though, so *shrug*.

[identity profile] ivy-chan.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought they just came from all over the world and that was where it was located. It's entirely possible that they looked Asian OR white/other ethnicity, I'm just really irritated with the argument that wide anime eyes = white person.

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently, he's actually a mix of races, only one quarter of which is Japanese (according to info from others on this thread). But I understand the annoyance with the stereotyping of Asians all having squinty eyes.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-23 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't get so pissed off. The person admits they feel weird about it. You need to mellow out, it's just a crappy movie and crappier comic book/cartoon. Implying they're insensitive to the culture because the character design in the original made them form a mental image that conflicts with the movies cast is kind of below the belt.

[identity profile] ivy-chan.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no, actually. It's a fairly common and insulting opinion that anime characters are white because of wide eyes or light-colored hair, because some people can't fathom how style influences character design. It's not below the belt if I'm calling someone on the racist idea that round eyes = whiteness, despite the name and culture of a character.

[identity profile] lawliet-kun.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
...except the fact that, as has previously been mentioned, L is confirmed by the author to be mostly Caucasian. Also, Mello and Near's names are both European, they both look Caucasian, and they're said to be from England. So no, it's not really racist to think that a character who is white in canon should be white in the movie adaption. I would probably be bothered by it too, if Kenichi hadn't done such a good job.

I can understand your feelings if it were a different anime, but Death Note does have a lot of British and European characters, and the art reflects that. L has wide eyes because he was drawn to be Caucasian, as was said by the artist in How To Read.

Also, not all anime is based in Japan with Japanese characters. FMA for instance.

[identity profile] vejiicakes.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
L has wide eyes because he was drawn to be Caucasian

Is this different from how the artist of Death Note just draws wide eyes because... he draws wide eyes? Including for (http://discover-indo.tierranet.com/japanart005b.htm) the characters who are Japanese (http://api.ning.com/files/uBLwhWUInEd5vUPhklUl-4CzT4pE*nyAF3zvwvIme83XVvG7YvEjrZRufBInqGwhj7Ubxs98V7YyVwy8FDHV0RnXNLyW7BIs/Misa1.jpg), for instance?

(Nitpicking obviously--I do see where you're going with this. I just think that artists/concept designers of manga/anime stories that aren't based in Japan tend to rely on plenty of other things to get the non-Japanese ethnicities of its characters across. Things which really don't fall into the category of basic anime stylization around the eyes, of all things. Like cultural cues and such.)

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
L has wide eyes because he was drawn to be Caucasian

Er, no. Wide eyes in anime have nothing to do with being white - it's a sign of innocence/naivete/youth. That's why children have such large eyes, and women, who are (traditionally) supposed to act more innocent (the word 'innocent' or 'naive' - amae - in Japanese is also associated with kindness and thinking of others before yourself) also have larger eyes. Narrow eyes are a sign of being older, jaded, wordly, cynical, mature, what-have-you.

When white people draw Asians, we denote their race by exaggerating the epithantic folds though slanted or squinty eyes. To a Japanese person, their eyes are the norm, and they denote white people through their own stereotypes of white people, what they see as defining features - usually blond hair and blue eyes (and if they're American, a generally crazy personality :P)

In L's case... I think he just as large eyes because it's creepy and makes it look like he hasn't slept. :P

sort of like the Avatar: The Last Airbender puffles.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
. . . Kind of fail. I mean, yeah, the secret was worded badly, but as others have pointed out, L ISN'T actually pure Japanese. He's one-quarter, according to the Death Note creator. Meanwhile, Light IS full Japanese, as is indicated by his family.

Mello and Near are European, BTW. Mello always seemed Russian/German to me, and Near seemed kind of British (his name seemed really British to me - Nate River, but I could be wrong). Matt's name - Mail Jeevas - seemed kind of Germanic to me, but I could be wrong.

[identity profile] ivy-chan.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
Not pure Japanese doesn't necessarily mean he can't look Japanese. (European also doesn't necessarily mean 'white', but that's another can of worms.) I admit to reacting primarily to the idea that an anime character must be white if they have round eyes- a common and rather insulting idea from many fans and non-fans alike.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
European doesn't necessarily mean that he'll look Asian, though. I know that it doesn't mean they'll necessarily look white, but since L is only a quarter Japanese and a quarter English, a quarter French or Italian, and a quarter . . . Russian, I think it was (my How to Read: 13 is upstairs somewhere, and I'm too lazy to go find it :P), I think he'd look more like one of those nationalities than he would Japanese. Of course, I haven't encountered a person with that exact genetic mark-up myself, and it would vary from person to person, but L wouldn't look pure Japanese.

(Though, IMHO, I wouldn't have picked any other actor to play L. Matsuyama Ken'ichi was a damn good actor, and sexy as all hell to boot. I'd hit that with the force and speed of a heart attack if given half the chance, yesiree.)

As for Mello and Near, they likely would appear like white (read: not Caucasian) people, if only because of their implied heritage. Germans usually have pretty pale skin (though Mello could be Russian, too; I admit to not knowing exactly what origin 'Mihael Kheel' is), and as for Near . . . Like I said, given his name, I think he might be British, just because Nate River sounds like it could be, but . . . I have no idea, honestly. I just think that the two of them, for certain, shouldn't look Asian because they're not.

. . . Then again? I don't care all that much. xDD TBH, I hated the entire Death Note movie save for Matsuyama-san's fantastic work, and if they made more movies and picked Asian actors for Mello and Near (I know they had a sequel and a spinoff, but I never watched), and they are as talented and sexy as Matsuyama-san, then by all means, they have my vote. =D . . . I sound so shallow, but honestly that's about as far as my caring goes. Can they act the part? Can they do it successfully? Yes? Then I don't care if they're from Mars, so long as they have good make-up to look the part. Let the cameras roll!

Also, I do agree with what you said about "the character must be white if they have round eyes blah blah." It is irritating - downright insulting, in fact, and it is common, too. Actually, you want to know what I honestly thought? When I first started reading Death Note, I thought L was Japanese, because everyone else around him was. It wasn't until my best friend (and Kira) pointed out to me that he probably wasn't that I started to think otherwise, and then it wasn't until Ohba confirmed it in HtR13 that I realized it as fact. Generally, for me, I look at the setting of the story; if it takes place in Japan, then - unless otherwise stated - I assume all the characters of the story are Japanese. If it takes place in, say, Germany, like Fullmetal Alchemist (pretty sure they're in a Germany-like country, anyway), then I assume the characters are all German unless otherwise stated. If it takes place in a completely different world with a whole new onslaught of races, like elves and half-elves and whatnot, then I assume that there ARE NO ethnic races that exist in this world and that the entire argument for it should be thrown out the window.

. . . And this was a long response. And I'm sorry. ^^; I, um, tend to ramble. A lot.
