Oh, yeah, I totally agree. You know what else pissed me off? Light being Japanese. I mean, that's an English name and he has light hair. Also, Mello and Near should have been white people. In fact, I think that when we make live action versions of anime, we should piss on their Japanese roots and the culture portrayed in the work, and portray everyone as white Americans. Amirite? Who's with me?

I can understand how this happens, it's happened to me a few times. 'Wait, what do you mean Cloud isn't white?'

After graphics advanced enough you could clearly see their faces, I stopped being so into JRPGs. There's all sorts of stuff about ethnocentrism, and projection, and yadda yadda, but basically it's nothing I'd feel too terrible about ,even if they people here are giving you a hard time.

You won't win any points making your judgment on eye shape, but canonically I think the character's supposed to be only a quarter Japanese, so, sure, I wouldn't mind seeing a multi-ethnic actor play him.

I have to agree, although not because he's drawn "with round eyes." He's British (creator says 1/4 English, Russian, Japanese, and French or Italian), as are Near and Mello. Not Japanese.

On the other hand, in my opinion the movies were absolute shit in general. :P

i like how everyone is attacking you for being a ~racist~, when all of the characters in that movie probably should be played by white people (just because i doubt the chances of finding a good japanese/russian/english/italian/whatever else actor).

if it's so racist to have white people playing characters from a show with NO REAL NATIONALITIES, why isn't it racist to have japanese people playing people who are canonically white and british?

of course, that's not touching on the fact that it's a japanese movie.

Ok... IMO that actor is exactly how I pictured L in my head and I love him.

And to all the people who are commenting that L is all mixed race and crap the writter never said that. He said he had mixed heratige sure but by saying he's a quater british or whatever does not imply that that british part of him is white. Ethnicity =/= Birthplace.

What I want to say is--well, it's a movie made in Japan, (originally) for a Japanese audience, about a Japanese manga. How many foreign actors do you see in Japanese films?

It might not be right (depending on your definition of the word, anyway,) but it certainly makes sense.

Dear Anon: Japanese people can have round eyes, too. There's a reason one of the many adjectives we learned in Japanese class to go with body parts included round for the eyes. :|

But if you look at some of Obata's more realistic color drawings, it does show L with eyes that look Asian. As it's already been stated, he's a quarter Japanese. So it's not so strange that a Japanese actor is playing him. The movie is Japanese. The source material is Japanese too. A local actor would be the most likely thing.

I think the guy does an amazing job embodying everything that L is. So I hope in the future you can take another look at his performance and see how much it clicks.

And, um, Asians can have 'round' eyes too, you know. The squinty eye steryotype is really old (and starting to get more and more racist).
L's eyes are also not normal. How many Caucasians have you seen that have that round eyes?

Well, L is actually mostly European (says so in How to Read: 13), so I can see where you're coming from.

But I still think Matsuyama Ken'ichi (the actor who plays L) is dead sexy. Dead. Sexy.
