I can understand how this happens, it's happened to me a few times. 'Wait, what do you mean Cloud isn't white?'

After graphics advanced enough you could clearly see their faces, I stopped being so into JRPGs. There's all sorts of stuff about ethnocentrism, and projection, and yadda yadda, but basically it's nothing I'd feel too terrible about ,even if they people here are giving you a hard time.

I'm not into Final Fantasy, so I've only seen the character during that one time I watched FFVII:AC and in passing, but....Cloud's not white? Um, info please!

First off, don't be a jerk. There's no need to be rude like that.

Second, I know that the world of "Final Fantasy VII" is not the world that we live on. The ethnic groups we have here in the real world may influence the different cultures of that fictional world, but they are not the same.

My comment was in reference to the hoardes of people who stamp their feet, pound their fists, and insist that "THIS GAME IZ MADE IN TEH JAPANZ SO ALL TEH PPLZ IZ JAPANEEZ!!1!one!!" I mean, seriously. They come out of the woodwork for discussions like this. I'm not saying Cloud is Caucasian, but I am saying he is not Japanese, and I'm pretty sure you'd agree with that.

As for the specifics of the statement above, let's go ahead and take a look at the "Is Cloud white?" question. It is not the question being I set out to discuss (though I can see why you would think I did), but since you brought it up, let's look at it.

As I said before, he is not Caucasian (an ethnic descriptor). He is, however, white (a descriptor of physical appearance). His skin is fair, so he is not black and he is not brown.

Cloud is white. It is an acurate description of the color of his skin. It's like saying Red XIII is red, Barret is tall, Tifa is busty, or Yuffie is young. These adjectives accurately describe the characters as physical descriptions.

Oh, thank gawd, I thought I might be the only one who differentiated between the term white (an adjective, a descriptor) and Caucasian (a race). meep.

Speaking of race in FFVII, though, I always got the impression that Cloud and most of the Shinra-corp dudes are supposed to be white, notably Rufus. In anime, blonde hair + blue eyes is usually coded as 'white' and Cloud and Rufus both ping it.

I didn't notice when I was younger and first playing the game, but later when I picked up Crisis Core I realized, 'hey, Wutai is really quasi-Asian-looking and Yuffie looks pretty Asian and there's this whole sub-plot about Shinra invading Wutai where it's clear Shinra are the villains and the Wutai folk are nobly defending their homeland.' And what with Shinra corp being the cause of RARGH THE ENVIRONMENT IS GOING TO HELL I thought it all to be a not-so subtle subtext for

1) West taking over East, saying, 'give us your resources'
2) West pillaging environment
3) ????
4) PROFIT

I mean, this is speculation, but still... it uhhh really strikes me that way.

ETA: AND WHILE I'M AT IT it's notable to say that FFVII is the only FF game to have a black dude ever and Barret is pretty, well, I don't wanna say "Gangsta", but he's in line with Japanese stereotypes of African Americans, and him being in the mix gives whatever city it is Shinra corp's supposed to be in (...I forget) an American dystopia sort of flavour. ...In my opinion.
