I gotta agree. He didn't actively kill people on the regular on the show, so he wasn't *incompetent*, just lazy and too full of himself.
I actually liked Frank a bit, because he did have his moments of pathos and empathy, enough to show that he could *become* a good guy if he were actually taken in and treated like a friend by people. He loosened up when he was treated more like a buddy.

I love M*A*S*H to death, but re-re-re-watching does show it's bad spots rather glaringly.

I think they made him a cheat because they realised that there were points in the first season where Trapper and Hawkeye were so relentlessly bullying him, even without provocation, that they needed to do something to try and keep the audience from sympathising with him. Hawkeye and Trapper were such a toxic combination. Bringing in BJ was the best thing they did for Hawkeye's character.

I actually liked Trapper more than BJ (as a character) but didn't really like how he and Hawkeye acted (and acted out) a lot of the time. The first season in particular was SUPER gross in a lot of ways; misogynistic, racist, rapey, so much bullying.....

The acting out was particularly hard to take. I get that being a draftee sucked, but they were fucking doctors and should at least have acted even slightly professional about saving lives. It isn't as if they were in the hardest position in the army either, they weren't front line doctors. MASH units might be close to the front, but it wasn't aid station duty. And how dare their country ask them to serve in a way that was a billion percent less harsh than the previous war with draftees too. Grown ass adults acting like tantruming toddlers asked to put their toys away, instead of acting like adults with a job to do. How dare the army ask them to try and stop the actual soldiers from dying.

Eh. They never shirked actual medical work. Nobody ever died because they were too busy playing poker or whatever.

Since the book was based on an actual M*A*S*H doctor's experiences, I'd say that the acting out in a lot of cases was a pressure release and a way to survive. I just really hated the crap about the nurses and the locals, and the bullying they did of both Frank and Radar (whom they professed to like), and Margaret, too - way too rapey toward here, it was gross.

I used to think he was too dumb to be a doctor. Then I had to go to a real life doctor who was even dumber.

Larry Linville used to say, people think Frank Burns is a caricature and he's not. He's really out there. He's all over. Don't put him in charge of your bridge club. Don't elect him to office.

We didn't listen.

He sounds like a smart man. IME, there are always people too dumb to be where they are, and yet...
