There is no such thing as an easy road trip in the US. Having lived most of my adult life in Europe, I moved to America to be close to my elderly parents a few years ago. I’m an hour’s drive away from them. Next weekend I’m going on holiday three states away. It’s a 17.5 hour drive and I will have to break it into two days. My holiday spot is just four hours beyond the closest major city to my house. In the U.K. I lived outside of an average market town and was less than 10 minutes to the high street or the out of town shopping centre.

Which states?

NAYRT but there are several places where you could draw a 17-hour line and hit at least three states.

The actual point of a road trip is that it does take multiple days. That is the whole reason it is called a road trip and not just a vacation. If you are not doing multiple days, you are not road tripping properly. Complaining that your road trip is taking two days is like complaining your glass of water is wet and in a glass.

100% this. If you just want to get from one place to another, you fly. Road tripping is all about the actual experience of the traveling.

- someone who has road tripped through multiple states because the entire point was to travel through those states and experience them

I read “road trip” in the secret as “car journey” meaning the exact same as just driving anywhere in one burst.

Most Americans cannot do the kind of road trip you’re talking about plus go to cons and meet up with fandom friends unless it’s all within about 500-600 miles. It’s just not possible to get that kind of time off work and pay for everything and have it be worthwhile. A trip like that would mean two weeks off work (when I only get one week a year) and it would cost me thousands of dollars in gas, food, lodging, and convention tickets. That’s not even counting actually doing any thing at the convention and most now you can only browse the merch hall on the entrance ticket. Oh and lodging in the convention city will be triple everywhere else. A three day trip to a con in Chicago using compensation airfare cost me close to $3500 this spring (I had to pay almost half of the airfare even though I was traveling to a hub and it was closer than my Covid cancelled destination).
