My fandom friends are an "easy roadtrip" of 15 hours driving time away. That's JUST driving time, which is not really feasible if you don't want to endanger yourself and others, so it's a very tiring two-day drive, one way. The U.S. is very large, and outside of bigger cities, no, you don't necessarily have bunches of cons and meet-ups. A lot of people are in the same boat as you - in the middle of nowhere, etc. etc.

I've driven fifteen hours, it is a piece of piss. Especially once you get on a straight highway, you can practically do it with your eyes closed. Buy a Tesla and you probably can do it with your eyes closed.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't believe you've actually done this, but when I got to the Tesla part I was then fully certain you're trolling.

But for any sincere Europeans reading this, the highway system is not that simple, and you cannot "do it with your eyes closed" or in a Tesla unless your end goal is dying in a fiery car wreck.

Tell me you don't understand figures of speech without telling me... Jesus, spare me from nerds who try to take things literally just to win their arguments.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand figures of speech. I also understand that yours is a hugely inaccurate exaggeration. Do you?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you understand how trying to take obvious hyperbole and an obvious joke literally was a dumb move of yours?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. I didn't realize you were joking because it wasn't funny, you see. I thought you were a moron who didn't know what they were talking about who might give the slightly naive OP the wrong idea, unlike the other people in this thread who actually do understand that the U.S is a very large country that isn't easy to drive around the way OP seems to think.

Now I realize you were trying to be clever and simply failed at it. My apologies.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, so you now claim you cannot understand casual speech? Come on, you knew what you were doing by trying to do as literal a reading as possible to score a petty point even though that didn't relate to a natural reading. You knew it, and you did it anyway. And you keep on trying to defend your literal reading.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I already apologized for not realizing your comment was supposed to be a brilliant witticism.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
See, you do understand hyperbole. You are trying to pass off not understanding hyperbole by actually utilizing it.

OP

I live far more than 15 hours away from every online friend I have ever made. Yes, I was exaggerating, because I am bitter, but like... there are other countries with rural areas? And none of those countries have as many fandom events, easily accessible merch, etc.

Honestly I think the reason I feel more bitter about US fandom than EU fandom is because I never see Europeans just totally refuse to engage with what life is like in other countries or assume that everyone is from Europe, Europe is normal and anything outside Europe is weird and bad and not really worth taking into account. Obviously you're not doing That but like. Yeah, I feel bitter about Americentrism, I make a secret about it, and the secret gets a whole lot More Americentrism in response, lol. My bitterness grows!!

NAYRT

As an American, I also feel bitter about it. They cocoon us here, and if you're not terminally online it's so hard to get access to anything not American or American Approved. Now that I fly the flag, I've been staying over in SEA fandoms the last few years, and it sucks hearing about all the fan events I'll never get to go to. :(

You can find plenty of non-American content on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
