Nah, it's just different kinds of cynicism. You think people are evil/selfish/malicious, and I think people are, generally speaking, often stupid/silly at times. The latter has been proven to be true in my experience wayyyy more often than the former, because stupidity transcends morality/intent

No, it is recognizing one bad faith actor can do a shit ton more damage than a dozen clueless fools. You have to rule out the former before you can accept the latter. Accepting the excuse of the latter just means you can be destroyed by a single one of the former, no matter how rare they are. Stop making it easy for mendacious bastards.

Walking around worrying about being destroyed by everyone I meet isn't worth my time or effort (nor am I worth the time and effort to destroy), but neither is trying to convince random internet people to agree with me, so again, you do you and go on with yourself if that's what you want to do

But man, this thread does prove that people desperately gotta correct people they're convinced are wrong, doesn't it?

In my experience, it usually isn't bad actors pretending to be stupid who do the most damage; it's bad actors who use the language and morés of a particular group to appear to give themselves cover. See: vocal male "feminists" who turn out to be abusers in private.

The real danger doesn't come from assuming stupidity rather than malice; it comes from people's desire to see themselves as Good. "I'm a good person, therefore the in-group I've chosen is good, therefore members of my in-group are good."

This has been my experience too.

Yeah. Never ascribe to malice what can be explained by stupidity. Humans are far more likely to be idiots than evil masterminds.

And even people who want to be evil masterminds are generally too stupid to be successful at it.
