I was into roadtrips when I was younger, but it takes 7 hours to get across the state of California and I’m just not into that anymore. That said, a round trip flight from NorCal to SoCal is about $130 so between the Bay and LA, I know I’m pretty lucky when it comes to fandom things.

Yeah, the thing people are missing is that it's virtually NEVER cheaper to drive somewhere more than about 8 hours away than it is to fly. You have to pay for gas, hotels, food... that all adds up fast. And that's to say nothing of the amount of time you're wasting on the drive itself.

NGL I’m jealous. We do have two cons in my area, one 45 minutes from my house and another 3 hours away. The nearest is crap; they only ever book no one anyone wants to meet and then all those people cancel, anyway. The only ones who don’t are professional cosplayers. Not worth the $150 entrance fee for me.
The other is better but the city itself is pretty unsafe and the part of the city where the convention hall is located is extremely dangerous. You can attend the con safely but your car (or rental car if you flew in) are definitely either having the CC removed or stolen entirely and you are in extreme danger of personal violence at your hotel and traveling to and from the con. Oddly, that one isn’t all that popular despite them always booming great guests…
