This is most non-text-based fandoms, isn't it? Idk how you'd have an actual, serious, interactive discussion about anything over instagram or tiktok even if you wanted to
sabotabby: (books!)

Same. I've yet to accomplish it. But it's particularly egregious when it comes to books.

There’s decent analysis on YouTube, though.

Analysis, but not conversation/discussion.

My only experience with booktuber is Merphy Napier. I do think she's pretty nuanced in her reviews, though I'm not a patreon or on discord (if she even has a discord), so I don't know what she's like in live discussions.

It honestly never occurred to me to get any book recs or decent discussion from those sources, for the same reasons you cite.

I feel like we're on very different booktoks lol. Yes I do get the occasional: This is the latest book and every one needs to read it! (for a while Fourth Wing was all over my fyp), but in general it's curated to people who stick to one or two book recs per video with a decent synopsis/what they liked about it.

This is a reflection of a general trend in culture. It sucks and I have no idea how to fix it.

Can't say anything about Booktube and Booktok but I like my Bookstagram corner. We read books (it's not a competition but we do hit our 50-200 books per year depending on person/circumstances/editions) and we discuss them - albeit often in DMs cause no paragraphs in comments drives us batty.

Dunno. I've found Savy Writes Books to be fairly substantial in her discussion of the books she reads.

SA

They* (Damn writing about someone who identifies as female in a separate tab.)

I don’t think any of those platforms lend themselves easily to discussions. Recommending books and doing a video analysis? Yup. Discussing the book with people in the comments? Not really.

I do love the pretty pictures though. I just wish my favorite books were the ones that got the LE treatment with the gorgeous end papers, ribbon bookmarks, and fancy covers. All the books I’ve seen that have gotten that treatment have been books I strongly disliked.

thank you secret maker for choosing such a lovely picture!
