(Anonymous) 2023-08-21 09:12 am (UTC)(link)That's why it's in the studios' hands to take risks. Place some investment in new media (cheap and expensive), but also place investment in established media (cheap and expensive).
Instead studios are putting all their energy on making as much money as possible and that means finding a brand that has legs so they can dump all their energy and money on these large projects. Oh the large project went over budget? Time to cut corners in these large expanded universes that are too large to fail. Except for when they are released in theatres and "not enough" people went to go watch said expensive film.
Then it's time to start cutting jobs. Instead of a 150 crew team for props and set, studios will only hire 80 people to run the whole set. Instead of giving VFX team more time to complete their work, studios threaten to take the work elsewhere if the deadline can't be met.
