I love this poem, and poetry is open to interpretation and all, but that's the opposite of what I always got out of it. I got that he was with a woman, and pondering his own age and life and his disillusionment with how it'd been lived, and whether it was worth it, to do the same thing and go to bed with this woman when he'd done the same before and still feels like this. He's growing older and he's done this before, seen it all before, and it feels like a farce to him because of it.
