[Jojo's Bizarre Adventure]

I mean... it's JoJo. It's not even remotely the most unrealistic thing in there.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-21 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't watch Jojo, but as an anime, it's translated from Japanese, a language where gender-neutral pronouns are normal, and use of pronouns in general is less frequent than English. So in that respect it wouldn't be too unrealistic for everyone else to just happen to use gender-neutral pronouns in Japanese whenever they needed to use a pronoun. And you can take the they/them as not literal in the translation.

But I mean, even if this were originally in English it would make sense to not want to get bogged down in drama about misgendering so using they/them would just be a way to move the story along at the pace it's meant to go.

It's not even about gender identity with this character. They are a collective mass of sentient plankton. So it's more pluralism than nonbinaryism.

Oh, as long as it's not related to gender, I don't think "unwokes" like prison inmates would have a hard time using someone's correct pronouns lmao. "You're a collective mass of sentient plankton? That's weird af but of course you're a they, no biggie. You're nonbinary? That's not a thing and I'm not going to laboriously choke out the word 'they' for a single person to fit your delicate feelings, snowflake."

The comment I replied to (not sure if you're airt) was all about the grammar/use of neutral personal pronouns and the potential of misgendering in a translation vs the original so I was just pointing out that it's not about gender in this case and again, JoJo is hardly in any way realistic. This is like complaining about POC and realistic depictions of racism in fantasy when there are dragons and magic around.

Same energy as Our Flag Means Death. Like really, all these 1700s pirates are immediately good with using they/them pronouns no questions asked? I mean, I'm not complaining if the alternative is not having any nonbinary characters ever, but like. It's definitely kinda jarring.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-22 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
But Our Flag Means Death is kind of the definition of anachronistic. Stede says things like "fab" and "vibe" and Oluwande wears Crocs. Literally nothing makes historical sense. Why wouldn't they be cool with modern pronouns?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-22 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
And JoJo is a wacky OTT supernatural shonen manga with aliens and a ton of major weirdness so why wouldn't people in that be cool with neopronouns?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-22 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
You are hang up on pronounces in fucking OFMD?
Show there Blackbeard dressed like a punk? Mary paints in 20th century styles? Pirates having wacky adventures with unlimited supplies? This show?
Lol. Yeah, sure

DA
Yes, that's why it's the same energy. JoJo is hardly a genre in which realism is in any way a thing.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-22 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't argue with THAT

(Anonymous) 2023-08-22 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
While I get the gripe about it not being realistic, I don't like to give takes like this too much credit or too much of my time.

IMO it's better to have people making it not a big deal and then just incorporated into said world.

Making a huge point about it, especially in context to JBBA, detracts from what the story is really about.
And it feeds into tokenism.
"Look, everyone. We checked off 'NONBINARY PERSON - SPECIAL" off out list! Round of applause for our hard work at displaying representation!"

Rather than "hey this is a nonbinary character and everyone refers them as 'they/them' in the universe. They're gonna kill a few monsters."

(Anonymous) 2023-08-22 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Especially since "weird alien colony of sentient plankton" is decidedly weirder than "person who decided their gender identity is nonbinary".
