I don't watch Jojo, but as an anime, it's translated from Japanese, a language where gender-neutral pronouns are normal, and use of pronouns in general is less frequent than English. So in that respect it wouldn't be too unrealistic for everyone else to just happen to use gender-neutral pronouns in Japanese whenever they needed to use a pronoun. And you can take the they/them as not literal in the translation.

But I mean, even if this were originally in English it would make sense to not want to get bogged down in drama about misgendering so using they/them would just be a way to move the story along at the pace it's meant to go.

It's not even about gender identity with this character. They are a collective mass of sentient plankton. So it's more pluralism than nonbinaryism.

Oh, as long as it's not related to gender, I don't think "unwokes" like prison inmates would have a hard time using someone's correct pronouns lmao. "You're a collective mass of sentient plankton? That's weird af but of course you're a they, no biggie. You're nonbinary? That's not a thing and I'm not going to laboriously choke out the word 'they' for a single person to fit your delicate feelings, snowflake."

The comment I replied to (not sure if you're airt) was all about the grammar/use of neutral personal pronouns and the potential of misgendering in a translation vs the original so I was just pointing out that it's not about gender in this case and again, JoJo is hardly in any way realistic. This is like complaining about POC and realistic depictions of racism in fantasy when there are dragons and magic around.
