My dental insurance via Medicaid is total shit and many people across the USA have filed complaints about it. It doesn't cover anything beyond basic cleanings and x-rays. They deny a lot by saying it isn't medically necessary. I'm terrified of what will happen to my mouth in the future because I'll have to go out-of-network and pay big- and I'll never have that kind of cash. Fuck DentaQuest and fuck HealthFirst/Medicaid!

That sucks!! I'm sorry.

I don't know about this stuff; can you just choose dental insurance on your own? Like google some price quotes? I was doing that a couple months ago and there were some really cheap (to me) options, like 50 bucks a month, 100% coverage in-network, 80% out of network, covers fillings and stuff like that, low copay....

I got several quotes that seemed really reasonable, but then got a job with dental, etc., so didn't go with anyone....

Dental health/paying for it is such a fucking scam in the US.

Currently unemployed. Any job I get wouldn't pay me enough for any good insurance.

Sorry, that reply was me, the AYRT.

Yeah mine has 100% in-network coverage and covers most of any out-of-network stuff, basic cleanings are free and I think fillings too, and is about $40/month. I got mine through the state marketplace so there are definitely cheap options out there.

Long story, but I'm an old fuck-up, with no chance of getting any good dental insurance even with employment. Sometimes I wish I was dead.

Do they cover periodontistry?

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2023-08-22 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Don't know, never looked. I don't even know what that is.

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2023-08-22 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of dentists and periodontists don't accept my dental insurance. Since I don't know how to drive, I'm really screwed if I end up living in an area in the future that has no coverage for me.

That whole 'we don't accept that' is such a friggin' scam. It's INSURANCE. You PAID FOR IT. Just take my damn money. So infuriating.

DA but part of the problem with a lot of the seemingly great dental plans is you have to be paying for a year before it kicks in and covers anything, so for that year you'll have to pay insurance plus any dental stuff you need. I was debating just going for a plan anyway but at the end of the day I just can't afford the $50/mo for a year plus dental stuff that's popped up. (I was looking because I'm having teeth issues that need to be taken care of sooner than a year from now.)

At least the ones I qualified for were like that when I was looking about a month ago.

Ack, that is awful! I didn't see that as a condition in the ones I was looking at. What a fucking rip off.

Teeth are for the rich.

I don't have dental insurance and I just broke a tooth and to fix it (which I def need to do because I've had other teeth pulled due to being poor and it being the cheapest option) it's going to cost me a minimum of $1500. Which maybe isn't a lot for some? But it is definitely a big deal to me. Luckily I have a small amount of savings I can dip into.

Fuck the Healthcare in this place. I hope for the best for you and your mouth!

Re: Vent thread

That's what a lot of Medicaid dental insurances do: pull out teeth- rotten and healthy- and put in implants.
I am sorry you don't have dental coverage. A lot of people in the US suffer w/o any.
Everyone thinks the unemployed and the working poor don't deserve teeth.
A relative helped me out, but I fear what will happen after they die. I have dental anxiety.

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2023-08-22 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man do I wish I had implants! Sadly I just have gaps. The tooth I broke is my last molar in one section, hence why I really need it fixed. The joke is the dentist said it probably broke because when you have spaces it actually makes your teeth more vulnerable, so by having to have all my teeth pulled I just cursed my future self. But I honestly didn't have an option at the time.

Thinking about it all gives me such dread and anxiety. Just when I think I'm getting ahead something happens, or inflation hits and my raise no longer makes a difference.

Sorry, I'll stop highjacking your vent thread lol. You just hit a nerve and I'm in a depressed mood.

Get your ass on GoFundMe and make people in countries with universal healthcare pay your dental costs with all the money they've saved through the dumb luck of being born in a decent place.

I'm not joking (about the GoFundMe part)

I don't have a credit card. Can I still start a GoFundMe for myself? No one in my family will do it for me.

Pretty sure you can start a GoFundMe with PayPal and a bank account, and yes, you can make one for yourself, and people can donate via PayPal or Venmo (which will send money to your bank).

Even in countries with universal healthcare dental isn't always included. I'm in Australia and they started funding dental care for children but "public dental" is a joke - over a year wait time for an appointment in my area and you can't go out of area, though I'm sure it wouldn't help anyway.

Don't know specifics for Canada but from what I heard dental healthcare is rather shit there too, unfortunately.

I've heard that a lot governments/healthcare systems purposely choose to categorize dental care and eye care as "non-medical"/"non-health" care. It's fucked the poor over for generations.

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2023-08-22 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry.

The dental Healthcare system is completely fucked in the US.

Hell, you could omit "dental" and it would still be a true sentence.
