Years ago in a fandom I no longer remember I read a WiP I was really enjoying and wondered how it would all end, hit the last chapter, realised it wasn't done and didn't have more so looked at the last update date. 10 years prior to when I was reading it. xD

It happens and it's always a bit disappointing, but a few times of having this happen is why I no longer read WiP's. I stick to complete stories I know have been finished.

This exactly! I love that filter on AO3. And it’s rare in any of my fandoms that a giant fic suddenly appears in the results but it’s wonderful when it happens. And also telling about how rarely authors finish a WIP. My experience is that they either abandon it or they never plotted out the fix so they’re drawing it out aimlessly for the praise of dedicated readers.
