Honestly, it's not that surprising, pronoun confusion is a common error in writing and being ESL doesn't help

Not really anything to do with singular-they though

Yeah, it can be equally confusing if there's more than one character who's he/him or she/her and the writing doesn't make it clear which he or she is being referred to. Good writing can avoid the problem for the most part, but sometimes it still happens.
