+1

I cannot and will not ever use it/its on humans because I've actively seen it used to dehumanize trans friends of mine.

I don't care if that's your preferred pronoun, I can't use that.

The last sentence: you're an asshole and a hypocrite. I'm not entirely comfortable with people using "it" pronouns, but if someone tells you to call them that and you refuse, it's as disrespectful as using he/him for someone who uses she/her or any other deliberately incorrect pronoun use. Nobody is forcing you to use it as your own pronoun. Get over your discomfort -which isn't even directly about you, it's about your friends- in order to not make someone else directly uncomfortable.

If they tell me to call them that and insist that 'they/them' isn't okay, then I simply won't interact with them. They can choose what they want to use and I (and people like my friends, who have had that term weaponized against them) can choose not to engage if they can't understand how something like that could be upsetting to some people.

So, what you're saying is that you're super cool with discriminating against people who make you uncomfortable. That's not good. Unless you and your friends are part of some sort of self-sufficient commune that doesn't require you to interact with other people as part of your job or as part of the greater community, you're skirting the edge of the legally-actionable type of discrimination instead of the type that just means you're kind of an asshole.

I'm super cool with not interacting with people who either can't understand or willfully ignore that certain words have incredibly loaded implications when used in certain situations and completely disregard that other people may have personal histories with said words being used against them and may not be comfortable with said word's use, actually!

DA Agreed. Hopefully AYRT is just a bored troll. Anyone choosing it/its would have to be aware of the widespread use and still choose to use those pronouns. Personally, I think that makes them the asshole. Especially if they insist on those pronouns to someone who has had that directed at them maliciously. And that isn’t something you can know because the practice is that widespread and has targeted minorities, people with disabilities, and abuse victims just to name a few. I would disengage myself from that person immediately and refuse to have anything to do with them, even if they were a coworker or someone I’m expected to interact with regularly.

I suppose you could also say the same of those who use the word queer to describe themselves and talk about 'the queer community', despite the history of this word being used against gays, lesbians, and bi people.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-23 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
The difference there is that they aren't asking OTHER people to call them 'queer,' they're using the word to describe themselves. I use that word to describe myself, but if someone asked me not to use that word to describe THEM for whatever reason then I would respect their wish and simply not use it in relation to them.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-23 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand the difference, and also there are people who ask to be called queer. That's their only label, not gay or bi or anything more specific because their identity isn't that specific.

If they tell me to call them that and insist that 'they/them' isn't okay, then I simply won't interact with them.

Yup, this is my stance on this as well.

Gross. What other parts of people’s personal agency do you refuse to respect as a condition of acknowledging their existence?

Lol, troll.
