What I don't understand is, why is that confusing but not when a character uses "he" for a personal pronoun and then also refers to a different character as "he"?

DA Sometimes it's confusing too. But it's usually confusion between two people so whatever. With "them" it's usually confusion between one person and group of people. I don't mind exactly, I prefer using they for myself in English, but some authors just become unreadable
