I was sad when one of my friends didn't know who Ozma was and her whole backstory. Then I wondered how many of my friends actually read all the Oz books as kids like I did.

Ozma and Dorothy are a delightful ship and there's nothing wrong with shipping them at the ages they are in the books. Young people, as I recall, have romantic feelings and urges too.

Hear hear! Kids can be gay, kids can have crushes, there's nothing wrong about acknowledging that.

Also, there's plenty of Oz fanfiction (including published books!) that has future older versions of Dorothy and/or Ozma getting together with male characters, and I've never seen a single person be sad or apologetic about that. OP, the fact that you feel "dirty" about the same thing with two female characters suggests there's still some traces of homophobic nonsense lingering in the corners of your brain. Don't be ashamed to pry it out and kick it to the curb.

+1 million! I ship Mary/Colin/Dickon from The Secret Garden. In a sexual way? No, because they're kids. But very much in a kid-romantic way. And I hate the purity culture that has kicked in juuuuust in time to make age appropriate same-sex kid crushes "bad" when mainstream culture goes along perfectly happily with opposite-sex kid crushes everywhere.

I'm almost 40 and the youngest characters I ship are 6. And I don't have the extra "excuse" (that you don't need) they're not from my childhood, because I only discovered the canon last year. I just think they're adorable together.

kid stuff has romance in it. like no one's telling you you have to read or write explicit stuff right? or you could age them up? or not! there's just a lot of options imo.
