There are honestly way worse feelings. You have loved such a nice life if this is the worst you've experienced.

But for real, I don't know if I've ever experienced this one? Like there has been plenty of queer baiting but I don't really recall a situation described here. Not that it doesn't happen, just can't think of an example.

There was Velma/Marcie (aka Hot Dog Water) from Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated. The creators really wanted to make them canon, but well, it was 2013.

The creators of Legend of Korra also really wanted to be able to be more explicit that yes, Korra and Asami were meant to be a couple in the finale but were blocked by the producers for the same reason.

Nah, homophobia is a pretty bad feeling to people who struggle with it.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Off the top of my head, Disney censors said no to an incidental f/f couple in Gravity Falls. They had the crew change it to a het couple before it went to animation.

And I don't know if it anyone actually pushed to canonise it, but at least one of the people working on the Ducktales reboot shipped Launchpad/Drake. I have no other proof beyond the vibes I got from the show itself, but it's possible the powers that be nixed that one too.

Sorry that homophobia sucks for some people and not you.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-27 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I get where you're coming from and yeah, that feeling does suck. It also sucks to have one's OTP shot down in a way that has plenty of unfortunate homophobic implications.

I think a lot depends on the type of media. Is it a low budget movie or a TV show intended for the home audience of the country that it's being produced in? Or is it a big budget tentpole movie intended for wide distribution? Disney found out the hard way that mainstream movie audiences are not as ready as they thought for gay content. They lost a lot of money on Lightyear and Strange World in no small part because they included gay relationships in an important role in both stories.

I am wildly skeptical of the suggestion that gay relationships were a major reason those movies didn't do well

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
They weren't the only reason those movies didn't do well, but they were part of it.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. It's sad that producers very genuinely have to consider how much money they might lose by portraying a same-sex relationship in their work, but it's just a fact.

People can deal with it, but can producers?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Even moreso is, since studios (sometimes have to) bend over backwards to make sure they get the money they need to produce, can the investors?

I don’t think the issue’s there. Companies will dump coal ash in the waterways to save money, and I don’t think the majority of investors would actually want that if you asked them. All investors know is that their stock is going up.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-27 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I immediately thought of my hc that this is what is going on with Owari no Seraph's story becoming bullshit and now I am sad, thanks.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-27 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
i mean the fact that it's full of underaged children might also be an issue

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Have you never read a manga before?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
You... you do realize that ships don't automatically have to include sex, right?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
ONS is such a weird thing. I'm very sure I'm supposed to ship MukaYuu (and to a lesser degree GureShin) but I also think the author is simply not able to write romance (the Guren novels are shit in that regard) or women so... I also assume that YuuShinoa is the endgame I'm supposed to root for?????

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with your second paragraph. But I don't think I've ever had a queer pairing that I was 99% sure was being blocked from becoming explicit canon despite the creator's wishes.

I do believe that there are legitimate instances of this, I just haven't happened to be into any of those fandoms personally. And NGL, my slash goggles are frequently on too tight, so my default mode is basically to assume a ship isn't in the canonical cards until basically everybody else and their grandfather is going, "So these two are down bad for each other and no mistaking it."

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I have, but not recently. I would not be surprised if it still happens, especially with fucking Disney owning everything.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually happened a lot in children's cartoon shows! In Gravity falls the creator wanted to introduce a gay couple and Disney was very much against it and blocked as much as they could. Cartoon network made queer representation for Steven Universe and Adventure Time about it as easy as pulling teeth, while both shows got criticized for not doing enough for not trying harder with said representation.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Was just about to say this. I remember in Adventure Time that the creator flat-out said that they weren't able to show more about Bubblegum and Marceline's past relationship because they weren't allowed to.
