There are honestly way worse feelings. You have loved such a nice life if this is the worst you've experienced.

But for real, I don't know if I've ever experienced this one? Like there has been plenty of queer baiting but I don't really recall a situation described here. Not that it doesn't happen, just can't think of an example.

I get where you're coming from and yeah, that feeling does suck. It also sucks to have one's OTP shot down in a way that has plenty of unfortunate homophobic implications.

I think a lot depends on the type of media. Is it a low budget movie or a TV show intended for the home audience of the country that it's being produced in? Or is it a big budget tentpole movie intended for wide distribution? Disney found out the hard way that mainstream movie audiences are not as ready as they thought for gay content. They lost a lot of money on Lightyear and Strange World in no small part because they included gay relationships in an important role in both stories.

I totally agree with your second paragraph. But I don't think I've ever had a queer pairing that I was 99% sure was being blocked from becoming explicit canon despite the creator's wishes.

I do believe that there are legitimate instances of this, I just haven't happened to be into any of those fandoms personally. And NGL, my slash goggles are frequently on too tight, so my default mode is basically to assume a ship isn't in the canonical cards until basically everybody else and their grandfather is going, "So these two are down bad for each other and no mistaking it."

Back in my day...when we tied onions to our belts...we had to download the fics from a mailing list or a .txt archive site. You never read in your browser at all. And that is why I still have copies of fics that have long since been deleted on my hard drive, on floppies, and even the odd printout laying in the bottom of a box somewhere. Just saying, sometimes technological advances are not good advances.

Nope. It makes me sad when I fic I loved but forgot to download gets taken down. But that's my problem. Authors get to do whatever they want with their works.

Nah. The author should always have the final say (within reason) on availability of something they created. It sucks but you just have to accept there's a chance that the fic won't always be around. As others have suggested, downloading fic is one option.

I agree with you. If asked, I would definitely say that an author can take down their fics if they want to, but it really bothers me anyway when people do this.
Even with my own (nothing special) fics - I have one that I sometimes think about getting rid of, but I never do. Because maybe someone likes it, or maybe someone will like it one day in the future, or maybe it will inspire someone to do the idea better. It's not that I feel that my fic is owed to anyone, and by extension no one owes their fic to me. I guess I just see it as being bigger than just being mine, but there's also a little bit of 'I was here and this is what this fandom inspired in me'.
Isn't that what the archive is for? To show what mark all of these ideas made? A lot of stuff is gone. What ideas have we lost or had to recreate all on our own? What do we build on if the ideas keep disappearing?
Yeah, yeah, it's not that deep. I still think like this anyway.

Nah. People have good reasons to delete their fics and not everything needs to be preserved. You're not entitled to other people's labor.

Nope. People can delete their fic if they want, that's their choice. I write myself and I have very occasionly deleted fic because I hated it that much over time, however if someone saved it onto their PC? Wouldn't bug me because I do the same thing with fic I really like. No one is entitled to anything in this regard.

i prefer having a circle of fandom friends my own age, but i get the sentiment

most young people think the world revolves around them and their very important opinions, but that's typical and expected

but life has a way of impressing self awareness on people over time whether they like it or not. to end up 40+ and still be that self-important as a grown ass adult having serious hours long 'i judge you/you judged me' fights on the internet, especially about something completely trivial like 'you insulted my preferences' or something, you have to be the type that actively resists self reflection or deeply insecure. and there are way too many of that type of person

Oh, same. The strong finnic (and scandinavian) pagan influence on the worldbuilding was what got me to love this comic. As you said, it's her life to live, but I still can't help but to feel a little resentful that she felt she had to abandon this.
