Here's a spicy question for everyone: should authors of published works be allowed to request that every print copy that hasn't yet been sold be "recalled" and destroyed; and should they be allowed to request that all distributed eBook copies be removed from eReaders?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-27 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, sort of depends on their publishing contract and how willing they are to pay back expenses and any ebook sales, but I'd be okay with them being able to request it, but not demand it.

...that is ...not even a comparison to fic authors deleting their fic

We're not demanding everyone who's downloaded it delete it . We just took it down from being posted .

This is apples to oranges in just about every way. But setting aside the absolute lack of relevance between this hypothetical scenario and the secret, if hypothetically an author negotiates a contract with their publisher that allows for them to do a recall of all unsold copies, then the terms of their contract should be upheld. Obviously.

This doesn’t remotely work as a comparison. People who delete their fic aren’t going around telling others to delete any copies they might have, they’re just deleting that work off their profile. Which is their right to do.

And as the anon above me has said: if a published author wanted their book recalled, if it’s in their contract then the publisher would honour that. So I’m not even sure what point you’re trying to make? Writers own the rights to their work? The horror?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Right, that question wasn't spicy at all. Of course they can recall their work, and the people who bought the e-book should get an automatic refund.

NAYRT - Unless this hypothetical author has every single person who buys a copy of their e-book sign a contract agreeing that their copy can be repossessed at the author's will (and all e-book software is programmed in such a way as to make en-masse repossession of a specific titles possible), no, that's not something an author can legally do.

Still has zero relevance to the secret in any way, though.
