Agree so hard. I actually love the remake just in its own, but I extra love it for taking all the fun parts and leaving behind all the really creepy sexist gross bits out. People just have really strong nostalgia glasses plus they hate the ladies. This movie was never going to get a fair take, but I'm happy it exists.

"People just have really strong nostalgia glasses plus they hate the ladies."

I don't hate the ladies, actually, I just didn't really enjoy the remake. But stuff like this is what has made me actively hate it instead of just mildly dislike it.

I didn't like either of these movies. I found the remake to be a bit more entertaining as it got like one or two chuckles out of me, but not to the point where I'd watch it again. But I can't stand the original and do not understand or get the near-worship of it, it was boring and profoundly unfunny to me.

+1

The villain in the remake made more sense, too.

Agreed. Remake has issues, but it is really fun to me. And there isn't the sexist creepy stuff to make me uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I adored the original, but I prefer the remake so much, and 99% of it is because none of the team is a creepy sexist pig who carries daterape drugs and was probably sleeping with his students. And I say this as someone who loved Peter in the Real Ghostbusters cartoon.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The remake is the only Ghostbusters movie that matters to me tbh. Four of the best female comedians of the time playing a group of dorky friends with nuclear weaponry? FUCK yes.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-28 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I also liked the remake, I do feel like they dropped the ball a few times in the remake, but it's still underrated.

I liked the remake better and not because they were women, I just thought it was a good funny movie.
Also Leslie Jones had very funny lines and her character had a specific job (New York historian) which is a lot more than Ernie Hudson ever got.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-29 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I do still like the original but couldn't really get into the remake - NOT because I think its a bad film, I just didn't really enjoy it. But I fully accept that I have trash taste and honestly I've watched worse and more problematic stuff than Ghostbusters 1 + 2 willingly, so my opinion barely counts.
Perhaps nostalgia and 8 year-old me having a crush on Janine Melnnitz is to blame, but I still get a laugh out of the original movies so its fun to rewatch sometimes (and in fairness, I only watched the reboot once, so maybe I need to watch it again to get it? idk).

The original was fun and different, plus Sigourney Weaver playing comedy, and Annie Potts being hilarious, I just liked it. I just kind of 'la la la' through the gross creeper parts, because I want to see the stuff I enjoy, but I wish it wasn't in there (and I hate how ding-batty and weird they made Annie Pott's character in the second movie, and totally ignored her romance with Egon).

BUT - i really liked the remake, too - it was funny and clever and had interesting ghosts and things, and it pissed the basement dwellers off immensely.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-29 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
100% same, I was thinking of making a secret saying basically this. Like, it's not the most amazing movie ever but it's significantly better than the originals and I am still kinda pissed they decided to make another movie based on those and not the reboot. Like, I would've actually watched a sequel to Ghostbusters 2016.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-29 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the original, but I love the remake a lot more, precisely because they got rid of the creepy, sexist stuff. I refuse to watch the sequels based on the original.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-29 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I saw the original in the theater when it first came out. Yeah its funny, nostalgic now, Murray and Ackroyd were comedy gods of the time, and so on. I saw the remake on TV, and I think it's better than the OG. I must be one of the few who thinks so tho.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-29 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, sorry OP.
Gotta disagree, hard on this one.
Mr Plinkett on yt (the reviewer who did the big takedown on the Star Wars prequels) hit the nail on the head as to why I found it mildly entertaining but the more I thought about it, the remake left a bad taste in my mouth.
Firstly (as he points out) it has nothing to do with the gender swap. In fact, it probably would have worked better if Kristen Wiig had written the movie!
The original was "lightning in a bottle". All the elements came together. It was genuinely creepy to me (the ghost in the library creeps me to this day) whereas the remake isn't creepy in the least.
The original had some adlibs but also had a tight script. The remake had constant adlibs (are we really going to argue that vagina fart jokes are funny? Or jokes about not getting an extra dumpling? Though I'll admit Chris Hemsworth had his moments).
The original's main plot was around starting a new small business. The point was that the characters were average slobs, that added to the humour. To me, the plot of the remake got away from me.
Also, all the talk about the sleasiness of the original. (To be fair, I found the remake more gross with all the talk about slime "In every crack" and unfunny vagina fart jokes). Apart from Venkman, the others didn't even interact with women and when they did were respectful.
As for Venkman, sure he was a sleeze, absolutely, but Sigourney Weaver was amused by him, not threatened. Note that when Sigourney Weaver's character did come onto him, he refused to sleep with her as she was possessed and he recognised it to be wrong (considering that even in recent tv shows *Supernatural* main characters thought nothing of sleeping with-raping- a possessed person who can't give consent, that's pretty big for the 80s).
Also with this one, Chris Hemsworth's character was sexualised constantly and on top of that completely stupid. Sigourney Weaver in the original was smart, witty and accomplished, who kept up with Venkman's wit.
Sorry for the rant but I truly love the original and take umbrage with a lot of the potshots taken at it. If people like the remake, sure fine. But there's no need to take down the original.

IA I love so much about the remake.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-29 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so marginally too young to have seen the original that I remember watching the cartoon growing up, and don't remember anything that happened in it.

Finally tried watching OG on DVD a few years ago and found it slow, visually dark, extremely unfunny, and sexually gross and cringe. Everything is predicated on you liking the main two characters (and being able to tell them apart). I did not (and could not).

The remake is funny and fun and gently camp, and slightly pointed. Loved every second.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-29 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
look, there was no one who wanted to like the remake more than me, but i liked it less and less as time went on. feig didn't really seem to care about it beyond just wanting to say he did it and no one seemed interested in reigning in kristen wiig (you know EXACTLY what i'm talking about don't pretend you don't). leslie jones was the only character that felt like an actual human being and not an over the top caricature and she saved it from being totally unwatchable but yeah i kind of hated it.

afterlife was much better. i'd like to see more movies in that vein.

You like what you like, OP. I mainly like the first movie for Egon and Janine. I ship them so much, I still refuse to watch the second movie because of them not being together.

I have no interest to watch the 2016 remake. It’s not from the same people so I’ll pass.

Late for all the active discussion.

I liked the one with the female cast and didn't think it was bad at all.

I don't have nostalgia goggles for the original. I'm old enough to have seen it when I was a child but never did. I finally saw it as an adult, and I didn't care for it. But I still liked the lady movie.

Different strokes for different movie-loving folks.

Now the movie I wanted to see a sequel to was the all-female Ocean's Eight. Where's my sequel?!

Remake is lazy and uninspired.
Started rewatching the original the other week (it was on tv after the news) and if I hadn't needed to go and sleep I'd have watched the rest of it. The effects may be dated but the characters and humour were still spot on.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-31 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
The original was my favorite movie for quite a while as a kid, but the creep stuff sailed right over my head and we had recorded it off TV so the version I watched over and over and over was a TV edit. Watching the complete movie when I got older, I just kept thinking "Well, that bit was just unnecessary." The movie didn't have to make anyone be a creep. It did not contribute anything to the plot nor did it make the character fun. It just shouldn't have been in there and there's no excuse for.

Meanwhile, the remake has the Mike Hat scene, which is one of the few times I have cried actual tears of laughter in a theater.

'Opinions' like these are just further proof that the Venn Diagram of fandom likes between Male and Female fans might as well be just two separate circles.
