You could casually ask whether they like experimental music, or whether they like a certain genre that you've been listening to next time they're complaining about new music. Depending on how they react, maybe go on ahead and suggest an artist you found. It might not be to your friends' tastes but chances are someone you know has more out there tastes than you knew, and would be into the stuff you like listening to. After all, they're complaining about mainstream music not interesting them, right? That makes me think that your tastes might be more compatible than you think. This goes both ways too, they might have older music that is really special to them or more obscure music that they've been shy about sharing that they listen to, so don't be afraid to ask for recommendations in return.
