What was the last thing you watched and/or read (and did you enjoy it)?

Brought to you by Black Death (2010) with Sean Bean. It was alright for what it was.

Watched: first 15 minutes of Jurassic Park. first episode of season 2 of House.

Read: honestly, other than fanfic, I haven't read a whole lot recently. Oh, I've started reading the Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi.

Been bingeing Endeavour. God that was a truly heart breaking show. Such trauma.

Last watched: Red, White, and Royal Blue. I enjoyed it. I would not say it's good or recommend it to anyone.

Last read: Project Hail Mary. Very much enjoyed it. It makes me slightly sad that the movie is on hold/canceled because of the strikes, but only slightly. It will be a better movie anyway once everyone gets paid what they're worth.

Project Hail Mary is such fun. I bought the trade paperback and couldn't read it throughout the pandemic - there was too much RL crap going on and I was too exhausted to lift that brick. But I got round to it a few months ago, and was blown away by it. Got the audiobook because so many people on the subreddit recommended it, and that was equally good. Now I've got the small-format paperback for a long plane flight coming up, and that's part-reconciling me to 20 hours in the air... I can always pretend I'm in a spaceship going to meet Rocky.

I'm pretty sure I didn't get half the media-related jokes but I'm working on it.

I've heard good things about Red White and Royal Blue from my friends, but from the online crowd I've heard the author of the book is more-wholesome-than-thou about M/M as a genre (in the vein of Alice Oseman and her "MY characters don't have sex, unlike all the other gay-fetishizing BL manga" comment). I'm both reluctant to look that up and be disappointed if it's true, and reluctant to watch without knowing.

AYRT

I haven't read the book and in fact had never even heard of it until I watched RWRB. So, knowing nothing of the author's opinions, I could believe it. There are sex scenes in the movie but they're very bland (the main one is filmed mid-chest up, with no movements at all). I've heard fans saying that sex scene was amazing and so hot, and I'm now concerned about their sex lives. I've seen hotter sex scenes on actual broadcast tv. So, ymmv.

RWRB is the crappy, tropey, cheesy romcom that the straights have ten thousand of. I enjoyed it for what it was with no expectations, but by no means would I say it's an example of a good movie.

I've seen lots of explicit sex scenes, and I still think inexplicitness is hotter. It's hotter when I can imagine what's going on in the most intimate bits instead of seeing it all as shown to me by framing and camera angles that may not be to my liking.

But, it also may be because I'm asexual.

Ohh, were you familiar with One Piece before the live action? I don't think I've ever seen you mention it.

I don't think I stopped smiling once while watching it, I found it a lot of fun.

Not a bit familiar. I thought it was about bounty hunters like Cowboy Bebop.

Watched: Granada Holmes, The Solitary Cyclist. I'm watching all of Granada Holmes in order on Youtube - I've got the DVDs but they're a different region and I'd have to set up a different player and it's Just Too Hard right now.

It's a great story and Holmes in a fist-fight is wonderful, as is Holmes being disappointed in Watson's ineptitude as a spy. (He's a doctor, not a secret agent!) But I do wonder that ACD didn't realise just how creepy his set-up was. Woman being followed down a lonely road. I'm sorry, Doyle, that is ten times more serious than you seem to think it is. But hurrah for Sherlock Holmes being there in Baker Street to go to, to soprt it all out.

I'm getting a bit familiar with Doyle's name because I'm also currently reading the last in the Murder Rooms series, The Dark Water and I can hear Ian Richardson's voice "Doyle!" when he's done something particularly idiotic. Good times... I've just got past the fall scene.

Last thing read: some of Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children and a bit of The Art Of War by Sun Tzu.

he's a great character who shows up later. I didn't realize you were that early in the show. I don't want to spoil anything for you.

Currently reading Red, White, and Royal Blue (I haven't watched the movie yet). It's fairly good so far, fun, charming, though I prefer way more UST before getting to the RST than it's given me. But at least the emotional tension looks like it's going to stick around longer.
