What do you probably take too seriously?

Loosely inspired by today's Secret #2.

Everything. I'm in therapy and practicing mediation for it. :-P It's actually been doing wonders for me finally being able to admit it though, baby steps and whatnot.

Driving. I find it really stressful.

I didn't learn to drive until I was 29 because of how terrified it makes me!

I'm 33 and people are always surprised when I say I can't drive; I have massive anxiety and low confidence and know for a fact I'd be way too shaky behind the wheel to be safe. All I can think about it "what if I hit someone?"

Back before I was born a friend of my dad's hit a woman who walked out directly in front of them (several witnesses backed this up, she looked straight at them and then just stepped into the road) and I think the second he told me the story was the second I went "Yep, no, can't do it." I know it's a slim chance, but I also know I'd never recover if it did happen.

Children of a person I know were riding home in a rain (it's normal here we don't have a lot of dry weather). And they've got in an accident with another car. They survived but older passenger woman from the other car didn't. My acquaintances weren't guilty party, but people in the other car were angry, in grief and had money. So the driver now has criminal offense. His opportunities with jobs aren't good, he can't emigrate but most of his family did. Yay. Driving is cool

I am really really glad that I am from a place there is culturally normal not to drive. It's a bit of "adult milestone" and is often city (don't need to) VS countryside (learned to drive from their father when they were 6 in a nearest field) but still. I am not going near any fucking car as a driver. Frankly I am not going near car at all if I can help it.
(but I always low-key wanted to drive tram or a train)

Navigating social waters. I'm terrible at it due to a shitty, extremely emotionally neglected childhood and I have yet to really figure out *waves hands* connections. Something is ALWAYS my fault according to people and I'm just... tired. I don't know. I got pulled into my bosses office on Thursday to be berated for being mean. But apparently I wasn't actually mean. It was just a tone thing. Or maybe the person who complained was just having a bad day. But it's my fault somehow and I need to be friendlier even though my boss also explicitly said I don't have to fake being happy. She also said I never take accountability but I'm not sure what accountability she wants from me when I don't even have a solid complaint or thing I can change. I'm sorry they don't like... me...?

I'm sorry nonny, that's relatable and I really hope people stop blaming you for bloody everything wrong with their day which seems to be what's going on right now. I think people can sense when they see someone who's not blusteringly loud and self-confident and has a ton of equally loud, confident connections and they just... move in? I send you hugs and <3 <3.

Which fandoms started off bad but got better over time?

(Anonymous) 2023-09-03 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by today's Secret #5.

None. They start off good, because the fandom is pretty small and just likeminded people in small communities, but as they grow and get more popular the assholes start slipping in. The ones who demand a certain interpretation of things. The ones who make their politics the only yardstick to measure them against. The ones who want to make their own mark by pissing on older fans. All those assholes and more. You don't even need an outright troll to show up to ruin things. Popularity and growth mean the death of joy.

Yes!
I am often glad for creators, they need this money. But as a fan I prefer small community with a couple of decent fics instead of big fandom. It always goes to shit

CRPG fandoms are so much more entertaining now thanks to the success of the Pathfinder series, Disco Elysium, and Baldur's Gate 3. Sometimes going mainstream and allowing the 'filthy casuals' into the gates can in fact be good and healthy for a fandom.

I've heard stories of the Tolkien fandom being much more insular and judgemental before. Parts of it are still that way, but it has expanded a lot and there is room for pretty much everyone.
