I think that's more of a fictional trope than a real thing that real people can do.

OMG, that's a huge pet peeve of mine in pro-fic when a character has some kind of deep, complicated realization about another character's thoughts/actions just by looking at their facial expression. It's like... people can't really DO that, right? It's just a convenient shortcut for the author?
