The problem is that when someone is in a mental health place where they talk about suicide a lot, nothing you say makes a difference. You can spend literal hours telling them why they're great and they won't believe any of it.

That is true.
But sometimes it gets through. Not always in a "oh I am as great as they say I am" but in a "someone decided they care enough to lie for me". And that can be enough to make a difference. At least for me
