At this point, I'm a bit tired of the policing of the label of Enemies to Lovers. Especially because I have a ship that is too friendly/collegial/low-stakes for "Enemies to Lovers" to fit (absolutely no violence or murder is involved), but is too antagonistic for "Rivals to Lovers" to fit (rivals sounds like they're merely competitive with each other and playing the same game, when in canon they're on opposite sides and are very much playing two different games). Like, I get the frustration when someone says "I love Enemies to Lovers!" and they ship two people who argued once, and only in a sweet "uwu" way. But I think the problem is that the labels aren't descriptive enough/are way overloaded in meaning/we need some other dimension that is how dark and fucked up we like the ship, and simply policing whether the "Enemies to Lovers" label can/should be applied to certain ships isn't actually a solution to the problem.

Like the person above said, part of the issue with enemies vs. rivals is that it depends on the stakes and tone of the canon. But also there's another dimension here which is how do people view the attitude of the characters toward each other? Like, how much hate is involved in the characters and how much cruelty is involved in the way they treat each other? Both enemies and rivals can go super dark here, or super fluffy. I don't think it's intrinsic to the relationship type.
