Games thread!

Shocking. Once again the Star Wars fandom can't tolerate a female character getting the same backstory as male characters have been getting since time immemorial.

TBF, I think a not-insubstantial number of the band's fanbase also think this particular song is one of their blander offerings.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-11 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel weirdly justified that Hannigram fits both these definitions.

She already had a perfectly good, maybe even truly great, backstory of her own. Forcing her into the same mold as the male heroes instead is not the progressive move you seem to think it is.
queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)

I can't speak for everyone else, but I like it because it's irreverent. Give me an irreverent character and I'll fall for it, hook, line, and sinker.

It kinda makes sense what they're doing though, IMO. If the Force flows through everything (and that's been established since ANH) then that means everyone has to have the Force to a small degree. I don't think Sabine is ever going to be a powerful Jedi and the show has said several times she's not sensitive enough for that, but using the Force a little isn't beyond her or beyond anyone with the right training.

AND DO YOU BELIEVE IN EORZEwait wrong fandom

(Anonymous) 2023-09-11 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
No-one's saying it's progressive. But no-one bats an eyelid, either, when Male Hero #5640 gets put into that mold, they just roll with it without a word.

That's the point: not that it's "progressive", but that the same 'mold' is seen as completely unremarkable the five-thousand-plus times it happens to a male character, and somehow becomes a terrible thing (bad writing, mary-sue-ification, 'forcing them into a male hero's mold', whatever) the second it happens to a female one.

Bespoke: It's not enemies to lovers unless both of them have successfully killed each other multiple times. what do you mean the fact that this only works in settings where death isn't permanent means it's actually less consequential than op's

(Anonymous) 2023-09-11 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
There's also the precedent of Chirrut as a non-Jedi Force user, so if that's the endgame for Sabine, I see no problem with it.

Beware of the argument “no one objects to bad writing when it happens to male characters.” Rather than get people to stop arguing about badly written women, you’re more likely to get people to start arguing about badly written men.

any and all combinations of expressions of the aesthetic are GAF in my book. All support to you in identifying the way you do. (I came up under strongly and explicitly "policing whats "properly goth' is definitely not goth" elder-bats.)

(Anonymous) 2023-09-11 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Who here is claiming it as progressive? Anon above simply pointed out that when a female character gets story-writing that's even slightly similar to a male character the fandom flips it's shit and acts like she's some canon-breaking mary-sue. It's the hypocrisy that's annoying.
