Might be food service related, depending on the establishment's particular rules all nail polish can be banned.

But that's not safety, that's just workplace rules. "Unnatural" nail polish was banned at my old workplace (a hospital) for years until some of the male doctors started wearing it and then it was just fine!

No, it is a food hygiene issue. Nail polish can flake off and contaminate food and food prep areas. If you work in food prep then you are not allowed nail polish.

Yup, I worked a food service job for a while and we weren't allowed to have painted nails for this exact reason.

Yes, as the others replied, some places allow it for some positions that don't handle food preparation directly (like server or counter) or with certain restrictions (such as gloves must be worn if the nails are painted) but many don't allow it at all because of contamination concerns.
