AYRT

TBH I don't have skin in this game, I'm just a manga fan who has experience with reading translations (and no, I don't think fan translations are always better. I also dislike the fan translations of WSJ manga that has weekly official releases).

My point is that a "fine" translation is not worth $80. That's a big chunk of money for a lot of people, and it's fine, actually, to not want to spend $80 on a mediocre translation.

And stop going on about libraries. Not everyone's library is going to have this book, or be in a network that does. And there are people in countries where there is no official translation!

Something being official means it will get more criticism. This isn't a bad thing, though I think you think it is. It gets nitpicked because it costs money. This is how things that cost money work, they're held to a higher standard than things that don't cost money.

Yeah, it's one thing for a free fan translation to be mediocre because it's free and the people doing it most likely aren't professionals, just fans who happen to speak the source language. Something being released professionally and sold for money SHOULD be held to a higher standard than a free fan translation, in part because the people translating it are, presumably, professionals with experience rather than just other fans.

It shouldn't just be "fine" or "mediocre" or "readable," it should be top-quality because it's been translated and edited by pros.

The funny thing is: a lot of the translators of the official versions are fan translators, they just got recruited by the publishers. Many if not most of them are not, in fact, professional translators.

So... it's not the quality of the translation then, that has y'all pissed, if you think the fan translations are better. hm.....

No it's also the quality. Some fan translations are actually better and some are more or less the same or worse than official translations- which means not great but that's okay when it's free.
Also, as the secret says, there are actually several reasons why someones might not be thrilled with an official translation.
