Part of it around here (East Coast, US) is the large number of dog owners who insist that they should be allowed to bring their dogs absolutely everywhere. And, to be fair, there have always been people like that, but it used to be considered... let's go with "eccentric." But the number of people that I have seen *go off* because their dog wasn't welcome at various restaurants, shops, concert venues, etc. I've been a dog owner, and I love dogs, but I would never have brought my Akitas to someone else's place unless invited to do so. It's bizarre to me how many dog owners now just assume that wherever they're going can and must accommodate their puppers.

West Coast, and DITTO. People regularly bring their (obviously not trained service) dogs into grocery stores and public transit, and no one says anything.
