I had a friend die once under circumstances that could have been faked, not that I thought it very likely. But since it wasn't completely impossible, I remember thinking I'd forgive them if they did turn out to be actually alive (spoilers: they really were dead) just so I could talk to them again. The bargaining stage of grief, no doubt.

I can't say for sure that I'd still have felt the same if that friend did turn up alive a week later all "lol jk", but I could see myself pulling a Watson if they had a somewhat defensible excuse for it like Holmes did.
