It would not be so bad if it wasn't everywhere. I don't know how this kind of art style got so popular all of a sudden.

Is it not just one creator?

(Anonymous) 2023-09-20 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
oh wow I never realized until I saw these all together how much of A Thing it is. like I'd heard people complain about the Cal-Arts market flooding in general, but there was never more info than that and I honestly didn't care enough to look into it more.

I mean, that particular image is just blatantly incorrect, it transposes the Steven Universe mouth onto the other characters (an actual comparison is here (https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fexternal-preview.redd.it%2FY7l8H5qEk5204hRwWjFxpA_jsY7dc58yrkcKCBzf2qY.jpg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3D7cea59547a8ea2f6ac1a5973757bb49733a56e0a)) (ETA: can't get this link to work, sorry), but also Rebecca Sugar didn't even go to CalArts, and Gumball is made in Europe. It's fine to dislike modern Western animation art styles, but claiming that they look exactly the same and come from the exact same source is disingenuous. There's also, though not perhaps with OP in particular, an undercurrent of hating the styles because they belong to shows promoting diversity. A lot of "cartoons from my childhood were better" rhetoric comes from conservatives. Again, not saying that's the case with OP, but it's worth mentioning.

The pepe the frog in the background should have been a clue to the trollishness.

I was about to comment the same. These are fake renders made to push controversy, it's been a while since it has been debunked.

Also, any similarities in style aren't much different from similarities in cartoons in other eras. The '80s and '90s and even early 2000s cartoons also had A Look and aesthetic to each, it happens and it isn't inherited a bad thing.

Also, all of these shows are very solid, in style and story. I love the art on all of these. SvtFoE is the only one I feel was pretty weak in compression, but still pretty great.

You and like... every other adult on the internet who watches modern kids' cartoons?

I'll take anything described as 'Cal-Arts' over what Rick and Morty has going on, though.

I don't think you even tried

yeah, I don't like that either. I call them beanheads.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-20 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw the Tumblr post that proved that each show has a different style and this image is just shit-stirring fanart.

I've learned to be more forgiving of that artstyle, given the person that coined the term is, quite literally, a sex offender blacklisted by the animation industry.

Fuck John K.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
whoa it's sans undertale

(Anonymous) 2023-09-21 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
When you say Cal Arts style, do you mean the Sword in the Stone Cal Arts style, the 101 Dalmatians Cal Arts style, the Iron Giant Cal Arts style, or the Don Bluth Cal Arts style? The term was coined by child groomer and overall terrible person John Kricfalusi, by the way.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-21 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
But you know who DOESN'T follow the Cal Arts style? Rebecca Sugar, strangely enough! At least that's what the guy who coined the term said: https://twitter.com/johnktakes/status/1594424574728613888/photo/4

Man, I love when reactionaries use random phrases to prop up their culture war nonsense.

Don’t forget about the 90s adult animation boom Calarts Style.

Jim Readon, Rich Moore, Wes Archer…all Calarts

In that group alone we’ve got the Simpsons, Futurama, King of the Hill, Wall-E, Bob’s Burgers, Rick & Morty, Disenchantment, Wreck-It Ralph, Zootopia, The Critic, Tiny Toon Adventures, Mighty Mouse…

The list goes on.
