I mean...I would never have invited an Nazi propagandist like Leni Riefenstahl to my studio, because I wouldn't have watched Triumph of the Will and been like...yeah I like where Germany is going, how good of Leni to do the bidding of the government so well. Certainly wouldn't have kept the invitation after Kristallnacht. That doesn't beat the charges for me.

look, people had divergent experiences with Disney, so you can believe what you want. I just don't see the reason to give a white christo-fascist the benefit of the doubt (yes I'm quite comfortable with wealthy christian control-freaks who desire more than anything to build company towns which adhere to their societal standards christo-fascist; it's like a key sign). like just being quieter than Ford isn't less suspicious to me when they're close friends and have similar views in every other respect lmao.

I don't know whether Walt Disney was anti-semitic or not but this seems like.... uh.... kind of an insane argument? Like, completely fucking insane?

Nope he was definitely an antisemite. And a union buster.

Completely disregarding the comments above I must say I (know nothing about the guy and don't care about Disney at all but) love it when people from a specific ethnic or social or whatever-group comes and says "actually, this has/hasn't been my experience" and I wish that was more valued than just white people speaking on behalf of everyone else. I understand your explanation and sure would want to believe he did it out of respect too. No idea what the truth is though.

Like, there WERE definitely people who knew him who said he was not anti-semitic, including people who hated him personally for other reasons (of which there were many). Racist? Sure. And I wouldn't expect him to have, like... any particular sensitivity. But I'd take things said by his contemporaries over, what, a gag from family guy?

(Anonymous) 2023-09-23 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoy that to some extent too.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-23 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
At least one commenter above you isn't white.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-23 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
But are they Jew is my point.
Hope you understand the point of my reply wasn’t some vain “eww white people” (surely not me who am not “white” only where one drop rule prevails) but rather “love when people get to speak about their own non-hegemonic experiences, and be heard, and I get to learn something I didn’t know through it”.

Again no idea about the man in question. We never met and I am not interested in his studio.

When people say he's a huge antisemite but don't really give any details about him being shitty to Jewish people it just kind of washes over me. Uh-huh, sure, that's just what people say. I've seen that episode of Family Guy too. And it's not like that's a big deal with living antisemites because they can't keep their mouths shut and it's really easy to get confirmation now that twitter exists. But dead ones? Yeah, not so much.

Point being it took me well into my 30s to realized Henry Ford was *WAY* antisemitic because I thought that was just something people said about rich white business moguls in the 30s. And it is, but holy shit Henry Ford was off the walls. So I wish we'd put it in context.

I think there's this idea that racist and/or anti-semitic people are EVIL and BAD and everything they do is EVIL (because it makes the average everyday racism and anti-semitism okay) so they think Disney can't be anti-semitic and also have had Jewish friends and colleagues, but that's not true at all. He can be anti-semitic in a boring and pedestrian way that's still wrong, and having had Jewish colleagues does not make this untrue.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-23 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah - it's that whole "I have black / Jewish / gay / immigrant friends, I can't be whatever-ist (even though I say and do whatever-ist things)" applied to other people. Who happen to be dead enough to not say and do them on twitter.

(Anonymous) 2023-09-23 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s just being a pedestrian racist though, isn’t it? Making fun of others because you think your ethnic background is Oh So Superior is bad, but nowhere as bad as, you know, actually hating or persecuting people from (insert ethnic background).
