The way fandom acts about shipping on the whole makes me think most of them really have not had any important adult relationships at all: platonic or romantic and/or sexual. And despite how strongly they claim to want more close platonic relationships between characters, they still value romance over friendship as evidenced by the fact that past a certain level of closeness (which is more often than not, from my perspective, as someone with lots of close friendships, a normal amount of closeness for good friends), they start insisting the relationship could no longer possibly be "just" a friendship, and if the characters are the same gender, the only reason it isn't "more" in canon is homophobia.

I think the whole same gender relationship thing is dependent though. There are some examples where the show itself heavily supports the ship but for reasons unknown but speculated they won't outright say it is.

Vast majority isn't at all like that though, I agree, and you often have rabid fans saying they are "canon you homophobes" after like casually hugging or smth or normal interactions haha.
