I agree with your approach, if a character I love has a tropey gag that I hate shoved onto them because anime gonna anime, then I just pretend that part of their personality doesn't exist or at least isn't diegetic (eg "omg she has pictures of him covering every inch of her room, that's creepy stalker behavior and he should get a restraining order" = me going "lol nah the pictures are only there in her imagination and it's just a metaphor for how much she likes him") because they're not real people hurting anyone real. But also not everyone can turn off parts of characterization like that, and if it becomes to frequent with the character, even I can't do it anymore.
