Same! It makes sense when I think about it, if the woman isn't intended as the love interest, then she's much more likely to actually be developed as a character and be more interesting, which makes me more likely to ship her with the guy.

But so many things have women that solely exist as love interests, they don't give her a personality (or give her a "perfect" Mary Sue type personality), put her with the guy almost immediately, and I end up hating it.

This is a really insightful point.

You've got to have a female character who's either written as not the love interest, or who's written as the lead*. Otherwise, she's going to be flat, which means there's nothing there to ship.

*There are het ships that work precisely because the woman is the main character, and the male character has been conceived as a love interest for her. The fucked up thing is the fact that male love interests typically get proper development, whereas female love interests don't. I get so depressed thinking about it. Women want to date people; men want to date sets of holes.

Both really good points, I think this is why I find so many mainstream M/F romances in media so offputting. It's either Sexy Lamp or Manic Pixie Dream Girl, and reminds me uncomfortably of how many guys still think it's weird and gay to love and care about a woman beyond how sexy she is.
