Eh, I wouldn't start with a serger, because that's most useful for knits and my old 1960s olive green solid metal Kenmore takes up about as much table space as a microwave and I can use it for other stuff.

Keeping a fabric and notions and pattern stash takes up more room, but provided OP is more disciplined than me, one projects worth of material isn't so bad.

But I was gonna suggest OP take continuing ed or community college sewing classes, if those are a thing where they are. Then they can learn enough to know if it'd be worth it to shell out for a machine.

And speaking of machines, OP, if you do get one, get a vintage all metal machine if you can and the weight isn't an issue. They're not that heavy; I can lift mine one handed. And they're insanely durable; mine was my mom's from when she was in high school, and my dad threw it across the room once, and it still works.
