Media ambivalence

Have you ever felt really ambivalent about something new you are consuming?

I just finished the first season of Attack on Titan. I don't hate it but I am not sure if I am enjoying it. I don't really care about the main character that much. And there are not enough Titan battles. And so much inner monologing.

But it is such a quick watch (excluding intros/outros only lie 16 minutes per episode). I got thru the first season in 3 days. And I do want to know more about Levi/Erwin/Mikasa.

I’m reading a book trilogy that I don’t really like. It’s poorly written, I’d love to throat punch the protag, and there isn’t one original thing in the whole series. Even the character names are all taken from other media. But for some reason I want to know what happens next so I keep reading.

I’ve been watching Magia Record and I’m really meh about it. Maybe I’m missing something ‘cause I didn’t play the game, but it’s boring. I mainly have it on as background noise and tune in when it sounds like something interesting’s happening.

I’m also reading Jujutsu Kaisen and, while I like it better than Magia Record, it’s not blowing my mind the way the hype led me to believe it would. The characters are cool, but I’m not super keen on the story.

I was extremely ambivalent about the Scholomance series by Naomi Novik. Novik is so good at world-building and the broad strokes of plot, but I'm so annoyed by almost all of her narrative choices.

Not an answer to the question in general, op, but if you're ambivalent about AoT, you're probably better off dropping it before letting yourself get more invested. The creator is super right wing, even by Japanese standards, and just pretty facist in general last I heard, and the general popularity of the series let him start slipping some of his wack ideas into the plot. I was into it for a while before all that came to light, so it's not like I can't see the appeal in the series, but you can definitely find better.

USA/FX used to play "The Skulls" this totally 2000s movie that wasn't very good. I watched it a lot on boring Saturday afternoons. There were a string of straight to DVD sequels that played all day too. I don't remember them much. I think following the plot was enough for me to sit back and veg out in front of the TV.
