Weird fic... grammar I read today

I was reading a fic today and the grammar/spelling was very weird. Like, it was super well written EXCEPT for dialogue between characters. Then it would turn into the kind of writing you generally see when the writer isn't a non native speaker. I enjoyed the fic but it was quite jarring.

As a non-native speaker, I can sorta see why this could have happened.
It's one thing to have a good literary grasp of a language by reading a lot and being able to emulate what you've read in your own writing. But dialogue is something different than descriptive text, mainly because as soon as you leave the style you chose to emulate by having people talk, the style might not work for the characters you write. And if you're someone who primarily learnt a language through writing/reading and has never or rarely had a conversation in the language with another person, any written dialogue can turn really awkward/unnatural/"nobody would ever talk like that" really fast.
