How far into a book/show/game/movie before you DNF?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-05 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I gave Attack on Titan a good try. I watched 33 episodes. I can't do anymore. So, I've decided to DNF (but read all the Levi/Erwin fic as a consolation).

For shows, probably around 2-3 hours, depending on episode length. Same for games. If I've been watching three hours of your show and nothing grabs my interest I'm very much done.

For games it really varies why I don't like it. If it's boring then probably also around 2-3 hours, but if the mechanics annoy me I'll quit a lot sooner.

For a movie it's probably around an hour, which is still better than books. I quit books ten pages in if I have to.

For books, I try to give it one chapter or 25 pages. If I've gotten that far and I'm struggling to not be bored, I give up. IMO, books should preferably hook me within the first paragraph. I've got too many books on my reading list to waste time on a dud, though.

I'll finish most movies. I can only think of two I have not.

Shows I'll give 2-3 hours worth of content.

For games I have an hour.

If a book doesn't capture my attention in the first 30 pages, I'm done. I don't got time to slog thru books.

Movie: it's either 5-20 minutes and if I'm not feeling it I nope out OR I get a little over an hour in and nope out

Show: Most new shows I watch don't get past one episode. I also have historically given up on shows halfway through season 2 or 3.

Books: Either 2-3 pages or 2/3 through a book.

Books: I'll almost always finish the first chapter just to see if has something that will hook me.
Shows: An episode or two, though this is the one form of media where I've been known to fall off after a season or two instead if it goes in a direction that loses my interest. (Actually nm if books are in a series I might do that too.)
Games: Very quickly. If I spend more than a couple of hours playing a game, I inevitably finish it.
Movies: Because they're so short I've only DNF'd a couple of movies in my entire life (usually by skipping around to see if it gets good, and dropping it if it doesn't - Ammonite and Bacurau come to mind). I've walked out of a theatre and asked for my money back exactly once, for The Musketeer (2001).

For modern tv shows, the pilot. They never take the time to flesh out characters anymore, so if they don't grab me immediately I'm out.

Books, about ten pages.

I finish most movies, but if it's offensive to me in some way, I'll nope out whenever.

Games, if the gameplay is good, I'll probably finish it even if I don't much care for the storyline. If the story line is good, but the game play is crap, I usually set it aside to try again later. I have about three that I have yet to return to and finish. If it's both, generally about five hours, just to confirm that it is both.

Books it’s usually the first two chapters or about 30 pages, depending on the total length and structure of the book.

Movies bore me, I rarely even give them a try.

Shoes aren’t quite as boring to me so I’ll give them a try. If I’m not hooked by the third episode, I call it quits. I’m also able to stop watching any show as soon as I lose interest thanks to enduring multiple (half?) seasons of The Walking Dead. My partner still loved it and had the view we should watch everything together. I finally just refused to waste my time at least two years after I first expressed disinterest. I’ll never waste another second on something I don’t like.

I’m the same with games; I’ll play until I lose interest. But I also rarely even get the chance because games are so expensive that I need to know a lot about them and be certain I’ll enjoy them before I spend the money. I get at least 50% of the way through most games and often will go back years later and pick it back up when my life allows gaming time and I’m not immersed in one of my faves.

Depends, I usually try to finish books or movies even if I don't like them very much because I keep hoping they get better later but there were a couple of movies I walked out of.
Also, some TV shows I liked until I ragequit.

I am no where near as patient as I use to be with media. I used to give shows a couple of episodes before deciding on quitting; now? If the vibes are off within the first 10 minutes I'll probably back out immediately.

The only exception is watching a movie at a theatre; because unless there's a fire or something I fully intend to see the whole thing even if its the worst thing that goes beyond grotesque or is utterly boring.

For anime, if it's a slow build/really long show, I give it 6 eps. If it's a short one season show, if I don't care by ep 3, then I'm never going to care. It seems to work out well.

The only time I've ever deviated from this was for Princess Tutu and I still maintain that the first half of each season of that show sucks absolute ass but that the second half of each season is PHENOMENAL and I have deeply mixed feelings on the whole show as a consequence.

For a book, I'll probs finish reading it unless it's unspeakably bland. Like, if I hate it, I'll still probably finish it. I hate read the entirety of Wicked Lovely because the premise was interesting but the execution was SO VERY SKEEVY. I did not read the rest of the series. I also read the entire Twilight series despite all the UGH about those because a) I wanted to be able to participate in all the discourse and b) A lot of her story is utterly terrible but at the very least Meyer's writing style is engaging. I was never bored, even though the story and characters were awful.

For a game, you get one session (probs about three hours) and then, if I don't come back, it's over.

I drop things super easily. I'll stop half way through the first episode or a third of the way through the last season. I'm not getting paid, I'm not getting graded, and Tru Blood is not getting finished.

I think my difference is I don't see the whole thing as a commitment. Each little bite is its own choice and if someone has over-salted the soup I'm not interested in desert.

I will give books a pretty good try. I listen to audiobooks a lot, so if I'm not feeling it by 30% through, then I give up. Like, I wait to see if something is developing, but if there's no character, plot, prose, setting, etc that's holding my interest by then, it's time to bail. Obviously this also varies on the length of the book. I'm more likely to give 30% on an 9 hour audiobook, than say, a 40 hour one.

If you don't like AOT by now, you're not going to, and you know what? It's just not a great show. I don't know why people are so into it. A YouTube comment I once read said of AOT, "Make no mistake, the violence is the point," and I think that about sums it up. I can handle that much violence if the story and characters are worth it, but these ... aren't.

What do you think are the most beautiful songs?

The show it comes from is one of the silliest C-Dramas I've ever watched and honestly I wouldn't recommend anyone who's curious to watch beyond episode 30 as it gets... truly daft.

But the main theme of the CP is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I love it:

Sometimes around midnight by the Airbone Toxic Event. It's been a decade and it's still the only song that makes me cry even time I listen to it.

In your room by Depeche Mode.

Probably everything to do with the fact that I had come across her music as a weebie teenager and been listening to the songs on and off ever since; but Kokia's songs just sound so whimsical and emotional. To name a few favourites:
Daiji Na Mono Wa Mabuta No Ura, Dandelion and I Believe.

I think "For The Love of You" by the Isley Brothers is a beautiful song. The cover Whitney Houston did is equally lovely. In the unlikely event I ever get married, that will be my first dance song.

Weird fic... grammar I read today

(Anonymous) 2023-10-06 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I was reading a fic today and the grammar/spelling was very weird. Like, it was super well written EXCEPT for dialogue between characters. Then it would turn into the kind of writing you generally see when the writer isn't a non native speaker. I enjoyed the fic but it was quite jarring.
