I'm sorry people are vitriolic about an abusive, narcissistic character???

(Anonymous) 2023-10-06 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you really have to go out of your way to prove that point?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-06 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
If calling a narc a narc and an abuser an abuser is somehow vitriolic, I want to live in your Ivory Tower.

nayrt

Right? Geez.

"I also think there is this thread of a kind of love that she does have for Rapunzel. It’s not what she set out. But she does raise this child and it’s the most intimate and certainly the most sustained relationship I think the woman has had in her 387 years or however old she might be. So as deep as the need is to get something for herself, she can’t help but fall in love with her. She’s spirited, creative, and charming and I think that stirs something in her that is confusing for Gothel. And Gothel has to keep reminding herself of what is most important, which is taking care of herself. But I think there is a genuine kind of humanity. It’s by degree, it’s not unconditional love but there is a love that develops."

Gothel literally only shows affection for Rapunzel's hair and every action she takes is to keep her magic hair. The only love Gothel has is for the youth-restoring hair.

Narcissists aren't capable of love. Affection or adoration that is temporary at best. And as other anons have pointed out, she only "loves" the power that Rapunzel's hair contains. If there were a way to separate Rapunzel from her hair that didn't involve damaging the power, Gothel would push Rapunzel out of the tower window in a heartbeat.

Not being a dick is free.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-07 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
How is that being a dick?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-07 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
You know what you're doing. I'm not getting drawn into your wankfest.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-07 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
HOW IS SAYING THAT AN ABUSIVE CHARACTER WHO IS ALSO A NARC AN ABUSIVE NARC A WANKFEST!?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-07 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
*eyeroll*

(Anonymous) 2023-10-07 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay abuser I guess??? That's the only thing I can think, unless you're a troll.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-07 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
There you go again.

DA

Does anyone else hear this line being sung?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-07 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)

Because while you are right, there are clearly other interpretations of the character. And you are getting offended that people disagree with you and shouting the same thing over and over again.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-07 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The only other interpretation is willing ignorance at this point. There is never any action that isn't written, per both script and what we see, that is true affection for anything other than the girl. She even largely calls Rapunzel "her flower."

The ONLY people I've seen defending Gothel are people deep in denial about their own abusive families or abusers themselves. Or people, like OP, who somehow think a different kind of abuse would be better. But there is NOTHING in "I'm going to chain you down when you finally escape from me, literally, because I want nothing more than the youth-restoring power of your hair" that could be interpreted as actual love. She literally keeps Rapunzel as a prisoner, Rapunzel only has three books to read which she rereads daily, and even the paints example was something Gothel only did reluctantly because she thought it meant Rapunzel gave up on leaving the tower.

Other interpretations can exist, but this is like saying the sky is actually made of cheese.
