Gothel only got the pain to silence Rapunzel, though, not because she actually cared. EVERY ounce of affection she shows physically is all about hugging or touching the hair.

Gothel's actions aren't motivated by love though, they're motivated by making sure her eternal youth flower doesn't ever leave. And if you look at the 'stuff' Rapunzel has it's actually very little, she reads the same three books over and over and over again each day because she has nothing else. The first song shows this.

Gothel gives her the bare minimum and Rapunzel is treated as a pest or spoiled for even daring to want something as simple as a birthday present. The first of which Gothel angrily refuses and guilts Rapunzel over daring to ask for, she agrees to the paint because it's an easier compromise and she's not 'the bad guy'.

I'd raise my standards higher than Gothel when it comes to parenting. Much, much higher. Subjecting a kid to narcissistic abuse while isolating them from the world isn't great, even if there were occasional less-than-shitty times.

Her song was all about "she knows best" but she was heavily focused on Rapunzel's hair, not Rapunzel as a living human, nor as a daughter at all.

Oh man the flashbacks. When this movie came out, it seemed like every other secret was about this relationship for months. If you're being genuine, well, the phrase "I feel bad for you" feels backhanded and snippy because of how often I see it used that way, but I can't think of a better way to say it.

I grew to hate this movie specifically because of the online discourse around Gothel. No other Disney movie brought out that much vitriol over a single character.

Anyone following this show? I only watched season one a few weeks ago and fell in love with it, and I loved the season opener. I found myself wishing the episode would be longer, which almost never happens.
