In Japanese culture (especially for manga/anime), is the first name always second? I ask because I've been reading some One Piece fic and the names are written with the second name first (Roronoa Zoro, Monkey D. Luffy). And they are called Zoro, Luffy in the fic.

I am looking at some Jujutsu Kaisen fic and people are calling the characters by what I would think is their last name (Getou Suguru, Gojo Satoru). They are calling them Geto, Gojo.

So which is the first name?

Yes, Japanese names go Lastname Firstname. But it gets confusing because in translations to English and other Western languages, they're sometimes reversed to reflect the Firstname Lastname convention of those languages. Fanfics sometimes go with the Japanese way though. Really sometimes the only way to tell is to listen in Japanese to how they say it, or know enough about names to guess which is which. I don't know Jujutsu Kaisen, but I know Satoru is a first name, so in English the character's name would be said Satoru Gojo. And Getou sounds like a last name so I assume in English it's Suguru Getou.

One Piece is weird because it uses Japanese name order for non-Japanese names, even though the Japanese language typically doesn't change the order of foreign names when saying them. Luffy, Zoro etc are their first names.

Hmm. I wonder why so many people call them Geto/Gojo. Maybe Americans that don't know any better?

It's also pretty common for Japanese men to be called by their last name outside their family. So even if the name is Gojo Satoru, his friends calling him Gojo would be pretty normal. This used to be pretty common for men in the UK, too, but not so much now.

What the anon above me said; calling people, especially men among each other, and anyone you don't know well, by their last name is normal in Japan. First names can come off as overly familiar or childish depending on the situation, and if you aren't sure how to call someone it's always safer to use their last name.

I’m currently reading Jujutsu Kaisen and most characters in the manga refer to them as Gojo and Geto, so fans are probably just going by that. Very few characters call Gojo by his first name (incidentally, Geto’s one of the few who calls him Satoru and Gojo’s also on first name basis with him).

Man, One Piece will fuck anyone up. ALL names are in Japanese order even if they sound like they shouldn't be, so Edward Newgate is an absolute goddamn mindfuck. Oda, I love you, but please.

In Japanese culture the family name comes first and then the given name.

So Chris Evans in Japanese culture would be Evans Chris. Depending on the circumstances, either can be used in conversation. (For instance, in US military culture, most people are called by their family name instead of their given name.) If you're watching/reading in English, some translators may switch the names around to conform to western naming conventions.

And looking at Attack on Titan, they have names written in the English way (Firstname Lastname).

Attack on Titan is not in Japan, which is way it's Firstname Lastname even for the Japanese version. When an author thinks about the context of their stories sometimes they change the order to mimic another culture's standard.

But in Japan it's always Last name-First name in official document. And more often than not people will only know you by your last name, but it's changing lately with young people. (lived in Kansai for years, never used last names for people my age or where our "social status" was equal)
The safest route is to stick with last names until you know a person well or if that person gives you the "permission" to use their first name. Context is VERY important.

For fandom: best to stick to whatever the character is using. For example Midoriya Izuku, the protagonist of Boku no Hero Academia, is called "Midoriya", "Izuku" or "Deku" depending on the relationship. THAT is a very important detail to the story. (Deku is also his hero name, but I'm not counting that here). Bakugou calling him "Midoriya" would be a very huge mis-characterization (is that a word?).

TL;DR:
if set in Japan: LAST name + FIRST name
if set outside Japan: often FIRST name + LAST name

Yeah, if the name is Western (or pseudo/fantasy Western) it'll be said in the English order, even when spoken in Japanese. The original version doesn't say "Yeager Eren," so you won't see it in fanfic either unless the author is trying really hard to look like they know a lot about Japanese but getting it wrong (which used to happen occasionally but I haven't seen it in years).
